About The Position

The BioMicro Center is seeking a Research Data Specialist to join their Data Management & Bioinformatics Team. This role will provide data management for major interinstitutional projects in areas such as cancer research, infectious disease, and environmental remediation. The Center focuses on hosting and integrating large, multidimensional datasets to enhance data findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability, ultimately improving reproducibility and enabling discovery through machine learning. The specialist will support the development and maintenance of a novel data management platform for biological and clinical methodologies, handle critical research data, and interact with a diverse range of research scientists from MIT and other institutions. Responsibilities include coordinating multiple research groups, developing new data collection systems, building and maintaining databases, and providing researcher training.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in biology, computer science, engineering or a related field.
  • Programming experience.
  • A minimum of one year of post-degree experience with data-intensive biological data.
  • Ability to work effectively, collaboratively, and independently.
  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Self-motivation and flexibility when working in a rapidly evolving environment.
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize a variety of tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to a variety of clinical research principles, study designs, biological methods, assays, and data either in laboratory or classroom settings.
  • Master's degree or direct experience in integrating biological data and computational architectures (e.g., bioinformatics).
  • Experience with pipelining software (e.g., Nextflow).
  • Ability to learn scientific principles and concepts efficiently.
  • Experience with web development tools and database servers (e.g., SQL).
  • UX design experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative and analytic support for building and maintaining a novel data management platform.
  • Handle critical research data.
  • Interact with a broad variety of MIT and non-MIT research scientists.
  • Coordinate multiple research groups across and outside of MIT.
  • Develop new systems and processes for data collection as needed.
  • Develop and maintain databases.
  • Provide researcher training.

  • This is a 2-year appointment initially, with the intention to extend on an annual basis based on availability of funding and performance.
