About The Position

The University of Rochester is seeking a Research Data Engineer II to join their community, defined by a deep commitment to Meliora - Ever Better. This role supports critical research databases and clinical data infrastructure within a highly collaborative environment. The Research Data Engineer will design, create, test, and maintain innovative medical research-focused “big data” repositories. They will provide technical support to programmers using these databases for reporting and statistical analysis for large public and private grant support. The position requires working cooperatively with teams of diverse skill sets to solve complex problems that demand robust, scalable medical research database solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Biomedical Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or similar discipline and 2 years of experience in technology and data intensive roles and environments required.
  • Programming experience in Structured Query Language (SQL) and one other applicable language (Java, Python, and/or R) required.
  • Experience with Change Management solutions required.
  • Experience with Version Control solutions (e.g. Git) required.
  • Understanding of data analytics and statistical methods required.
  • Expertise of software engineering best practices such as version control and software release management required.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills required.
  • Strong organizational skills required.
  • Ability to work with others in a matrix management environment required.
  • Excellent communication skills for describing progress and challenges to stakeholders required.
  • Attention to detail, patience and a positive, customer-centric attitude required.
  • Strong technical presentation skills required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience implementing and supporting data management systems in a scientific, research context (e.g. biospecimen software, electronic laboratory notebooks, REDCap) preferred.
  • Experience with Linux, container and cloud technologies (e.g. HPC, IaaS and PaaS) preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop proficiency with unfamiliar toolsets preferred.
  • Familiarity with file formats, metadata, and data exchange and storage standards applicable in management of scientific and clinical research required.
  • SAS programming experience preferred.
  • SAS macro expertise (preferred).
  • SAS certification (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement custom, research project-specific database infrastructure solutions for data collection, management, reporting and analytics, ensuring efficiency, comprehensiveness, reusability, and maintainability.
  • Provide development, maintenance, and modification of numerous large and complex medical research data sources and overall data architecture to support growing empirical research needs.
  • Collaborate with local investigators, staff, and biostatisticians to understand requirements, data sources, and data organization, and to develop optimal database solutions.
  • Program and test applications according to study requirements, including writing test plans, managing source code, conducting code reviews, and ensuring quality assurance through unit and system testing.
  • Produce and maintain comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Continue to develop expertise in programming, architecture, software life cycle, and testing through continuing education, professional reading, online forums, workshops, and professional groups.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
