About The Position

The Research Compliance Manager manages the animal research compliance program, which includes comprehensive pre- and post-approval reviews of animal research activities, with emphasis on assuring that animal welfare is maximized and compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations and institutional policies and procedures is achieved.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree plus five (5) years of direct animal research experience, including at least two (2) years of experience in auditing or monitoring required.
AALAS level 1 (ALAT) or CPIA, or eligible to sit for either exam.
Proficient with email, internet searches, WORD, Excel and PowerPoint, website design and management.
Effective, efficient, and tactful (service-oriented) oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work in a team setting.
Ability to follow through on routine assignments with minimal direction.
Ability to problem-solve issues, listen, interpret, and confirm understanding of others’ communications, and to be objective.
Must be able to use critical judgment skills to evaluate documentation and other data related to the conduct and/or oversight of animal research and to make recommendations to the IACUC, the IBC, investigators, and UAMS administration.
Persons must have proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

Nice To Haves

3 years of experience auditing or monitoring animal research.
AALAS level 2 (LAT) or level 3 (LATG).
Knowledge of federal requirements related to animal research.

Responsibilities

Manage a comprehensive post-approval monitoring program for animal research activities, which includes post-approval reviews of animal research protocols.
Monitoring of animal research protocols involves, but is not limited to, reviewing the actions of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) as well as research activities approved by or under review by the IACUC.
Coordination and collaboration with the IACUC and the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) will be required.
Develop written reports detailing review findings; present findings and remediation to investigators, research staff, and others working in or overseeing the animal research; conduct follow-up reviews, training, and ongoing consultations regarding reviews.
Provide focused, ongoing monitoring for any investigator or research team placed on probationary status by the IACUC or the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation due to noncompliance, which may include, but not be limited to, observation of procedures, inspection of the laboratory, attendance at all lab meetings, and presentation of focused training.
Report regularly to the IACUC regarding any investigator or team on probation and provide recommendations regarding whether the noncompliance issue has been resolved.
Review all New IACUC Protocol submissions, addendum requests, annual reviews, and policies.
Review new Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Protocol submissions involving animal research as well as addendum requests involving animal research.
Participate on the IACUC, IACUC Addendum Committee, and the IBC to advise on compliance issues.
Perform comprehensive reviews and inventories of all controlled substances maintained at UAMS for use in non-human research.
During IACUC semi-annual site visits, conduct preliminary assessments of controlled substances used in research.
Assure that compliance with federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and state Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) regulations is maintained and assist researchers with questions concerning these regulations.
Facilitate new registration applications and serve as the Certifying Official.
Participate in any DEA or ADH audits of research using controlled substances.
Develop and present educational outreach regarding the conduct of animal research, including potentially large (15+) group presentations and individual consultations, both to research staff as well as oversight committees such as the IACUC and the IBC.
Participate in special projects as directed by the Research Compliance Officer and/or the Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation.
Perform other duties as assigned.
