About The Position

Reporting to the Dean of Research, the Research Chair in Rural, Remote, and Indigenous Health develops and implements an original applied research program focused on community-based approaches to improving community and Indigenous health. The Chair will establish and lead a financially sustainable research centre at NorQuest, secure diversified external funding, and build the internal capacity required to sustain the centre beyond the initial 1-year term.

Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant field (Social Sciences, Health, Indigenous Studies, Humanities, or Education) preferred; Master’s with proven research funding success considered; Indigenous ways of knowing recognized as equivalent
  • 3–5 years of experience in health and community-based research, including work with Indigenous communities and/or lived experience
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, values, and ways of knowing, with demonstrated experience working respectfully with Indigenous Elders and communities
  • Proven research track record, including securing funding and sharing results through publications, presentations, or grey literature
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work independently and mentor students or emerging researchers

  • Independently builds partnerships, selects collaborators, and engages in contracts and events aligned with research and strategic goals

  • Collaborates regularly with Deans, faculty, and internal teams to integrate research with academic programs and institutional priorities
  • Works with Research Office, Finance, and Compliance to ensure proper funding management, reporting, and alignment with policies
  • Ensures compliance with FOIP, institutional policies, and professional research standards; escalates high-risk matters for leadership review
  • Maintains relationships with funders and stakeholders to support successful grant applications and project development

Responsibilities

  • Establish and lead a Community and Indigenous Health Research Centre, including setting vision, strategy, and operations
  • Secure and manage diversified, sustainable funding to support research activities and growth
  • Lead and deliver applied research projects, including building and supervising project teams
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with Indigenous communities, organizations, government, and industry
  • Build and manage a continuous pipeline of funding opportunities and maintain funder relationships and reporting
  • Create opportunities for student, faculty, and staff engagement in research and integrate research with academic programs
  • Share and promote research findings through publications, presentations, and external representation
  • Collaborate with internal teams to align research initiatives with institutional priorities and strategic plans
