About The Position

The Beirne B. Carter Immunology Center (CIC) at the University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Medicine is seeking a Research Associate (Postdoctoral scholar) to join the Anderson Lab. This position offers an opportunity to advance knowledge, learn practical lab-based skills, gain research experience, and participate in exciting science for a highly motivated individual. Research in the Anderson Lab focuses on engineering novel T cell-based immunotherapies to overcome immune suppression in solid tumors and developing novel pre-clinical models for ovarian cancer research. The Research Associate will participate in various lab projects, contribute to writing study reports, papers, and grant applications, and is expected to develop research programs as time permits. The role involves attending laboratory meetings, seminars, and collaborating with other researchers. Opportunities to develop personnel and project management skills, and to form a mentoring committee are available. Eligibility for National Institutes of Health (NIH) post-doctoral fellowship funding is helpful but not mandatory.

Requirements

Terminal degree at the time of hire in Immunology, Virology, Lung Biology or a related field.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Proven grant writing skills are also important (e.g., pre-doctoral awards and/or submitted grants).
Highly motivated to develop new research avenues.
Detail-oriented
Highly collaborative
Must be performed fully on-site.

Nice To Haves

Eligibility for National Institutes of Health (NIH) post-doctoral fellowship funding is helpful.
Intensive experience in small animal procedures, flow cytometry, molecular biology and immune cell purification and culture, etc.
Experience in molecular biology, microscopy, cellular immunology, T cell biology, lung biology, murine models of disease, and human samples is preferred.
Demonstrated experience in immunology, genetic engineering, molecular biology, cancer biology, or a related field.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in T cell biology, lymphocyte analysis, genetic engineering, animal husbandry and handling, and/or human translational immunology experience.
Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD or equivalent degree in a relative scientific field of study by appointment start date.

Responsibilities

Full-time research or scholarship at the University.
Preparatory for a full-time academic or research career.
Supervised by a senior scholar; and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship.
Other duties may be assigned.
Participate in a multiplicity of relevant lab projects.
Write study reports for the study sponsors, papers, and grant applications.
Develop research programs as time permits.
Attend and participate in laboratory meetings, CIC and Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology (MIC)-related seminars, and Cancer Center seminars.
Work with graduate students, technicians, fellows and collaborators in the laboratories involved in the project.
Develop personnel and project management skills.
Develop a mentoring committee.
