About The Position

Theradaptive is seeking a Research Associate I-II to support research and development and product development projects in regenerative medicine. This laboratory-based role involves designing, executing, analyzing, and presenting experiments related to implant materials, protein characterization, buffer optimization, bioscaffold manufacturing, and manufacturing process development. The role communicates experimental results and issues affecting data quality or timelines to the Principal Engineer and Product Development team. The position is based at Theradaptive’s corporate headquarters and laboratory in Frederick, Maryland.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Bioengineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Working knowledge of basic descriptive and inferential statistical methods, including curve fitting and error analysis.
  • Strong technical writing and presentation abilities.
  • High proficiency with data analysis tools such as Excel and GraphPad Prism, and presentation tools such as Word and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory and office setting, with approximately 75% of the day potentially spent in the laboratory.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work with chemicals and biochemicals and perform Biosafety Level 2 work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with bioassays, immunoassays, protein-binding assays, polymer compounding, 3D printing, 3D bioprinting, or lyophilization, or some combination of these.
  • College internship and/or up to three years of work experience in an industrial setting.
  • Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks or Fusion 360 and 3D-printing slicing software such as Cura or Slic3r.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute studies supporting medical device, product, and process development.
  • Train on and conduct bioassays, protein-binding assays, and immunoassays.
  • Use polymer compounding methods, including twin-screw extrusion, to blend medical-grade polymers and functional filler materials.
  • Use advanced medical-device and bioscaffold manufacturing methods, including 3D printing and electrospinning, with ceramic, polymer, hydrogel, metal, and composite materials.
  • Prepare buffers according to defined procedures.
  • Lyophilize regenerative scaffold materials containing therapeutic proteins to produce shelf-stable combination medical devices.
  • Evaluate bioinks, electrospinning slurries, and other feedstock materials for 3D printing, electrospinning, and clinical use.
  • Use CAD software to design scaffold implants.
  • Document experiments, results, and findings in a laboratory notebook.
  • Prepare technical reports summarizing data and experimental conclusions.
  • Create and present slide decks summarizing technical results and recommendations to senior technical staff and outside collaborators.
  • Independently design experiments and implement work plans.
  • Coordinate with team members to plan and execute product development activities.
  • Communicate project status, roadblocks, and results clearly to supervisors and managers.
  • Follow laboratory safety precautions and use personal protective equipment properly.
  • Contribute to writing SOPs and work instructions for 3D printing, electrospinning, and bioanalytical laboratory processes.
