Research Associate – Coherent X-ray Scattering, Quantum Materials

Brookhaven National Laboratory•Ridge, NY
•$74,050 - $90,216

About The Position

Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate to investigate quantum correlations and many-body dynamics in quantum condensed matter systems using coherent x-ray scattering techniques. The associate will develop and perform synchrotron-based coherent x-ray and x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) experiments to probe nano-to-meso-scale equilibrium and nonequilibrium dynamics in strongly correlated materials, including charge-, spin-, and orbital-ordered systems. The role involves close collaboration with the X-ray Scattering Group (XSG) in Condensed Matter Physics & Materials Science at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Requirements

  • PhD in physics, materials science, physical chemistry, or a related field.
  • Sufficient understanding of the physics of quantum materials.
  • Experience in x-ray scattering or related techniques.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a programming language such as Python.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to write academic papers.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • For a research associate appointment, eligible candidates must have no more than five combined years of relevant postdoctoral and/or R&D experience after obtaining a PhD, excluding specified time associated with family planning, military service, illness, or other life-changing events.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) credential as a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in synchrotron-based experiments.
  • Experience in coherent x-rays and/or resonant x-ray scattering.
  • Experience in strongly correlated oxides.
  • Understanding of light-matter interactions in condensed matter systems.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, perform, and analyze coherent x-ray scattering experiments.
  • Disseminate research results through conference presentations and publications.
  • Collaborate with the X-ray Scattering Group in Condensed Matter Physics & Materials Science at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
