About The Position

The “Roads of the Sea” project supports research and development of data-driven maritime navigation and decision-support systems using vessel traffic data, Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs), environmental information, and other marine geospatial datasets. The project focuses on developing methods for vessel route analysis, traffic pattern modeling, navigational risk assessment, and marine spatial awareness within the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM). This position will support software development and data processing activities related to geospatial analytics, AIS vessel traffic analysis, database management, visualization, and prototype tool development. The role involves collaborative research and programming support across multiple components of the project and requires experience with software development and spatial or data-driven applications.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student in Computer Science, Data Science, Geospatial Science, Ocean Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with programming and data analysis through coursework, research, or projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain software tools and scripts for processing maritime geospatial and vessel traffic datasets.
  • Support database management, data integration, and automation workflows related to navigation and marine spatial analysis.
  • Assist with development of prototype applications, visualization tools, and analytical workflows.
  • Process and analyze AIS vessel traffic data, Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs), and related marine geospatial datasets.
  • Support research activities involving route analysis, traffic pattern identification, and navigational risk assessment.
  • Contribute to testing and evaluation of analytical methods and algorithms.
