About The Position

TGen, the Translational Genomics Research Institute, a part of City of Hope, is seeking a motivated, organized, and detail-oriented individual to join the Collaborative Sequencing Center (CSC). The CSC provides next-generation sequencing services to internal and external investigators, aiming to expedite translational research. This role involves manual or robotic nucleic acid extractions, sequencing library preparation, operating and maintaining sequencing instruments, detailed record-keeping using a laboratory information management system, and evaluating quality control metrics. The position requires proficiency in molecular biology techniques, operation of standard lab equipment and sequencing instruments, effective communication, and multitasking abilities. Responsibilities are focused on sequencing data generation, requiring strong lab skills and excellent problem-solving abilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a science-related field (Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetics)
  • Minimum of two years of working experience in a lab after graduation
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to read and write scientifically
  • Excellent organization and record-keeping skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Familiarity with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Experience with standard laboratory equipment
  • Clear experience in molecular biology
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office products or comparable software
  • Candidate should be independent enough to manage his/her own projects once properly trained.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with next-generation sequencing methods
  • Prior experience in a sequencing lab or high-throughput laboratories

Responsibilities

  • Generate data for research and experimental purposes following established research procedures.
  • Develop and optimize assays for sequencing applications, and perform detailed documentation.
  • Responsible for planning, execution, QC analysis of study and communication with other groups involved in study.
  • Responsible for training of others.
  • Perform troubleshooting and maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  • Work closely with lab director, lab manager, CSC lab staff, informatics staff, field service engineers, and instrument technical service specialists when needed.
  • Perform general laboratory duties.
  • Research literature related to projects as needed.
  • Assist in safety and lab equipment training, protocols, data analysis, and presentations.
  • Participate in lab meetings by updating lab of progress, results, and future goals/studies.
  • Training of TGen staff on the proper usage of shared resources.
