The Gibb Laboratory investigates inflammatory mechanisms in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and lupus, focusing on mechanisms regulating immune responses to red blood cell (RBC) antigens (i.e., KEL antigens) following RBC transfusion. The goal of these studies is to understand why patients with SCD and autoimmunity have the highest incidence of these detrimental anti-RBC antibody responses, which cause potentially fatal hemolytic transfusion reactions and severely limit access to compatible blood for these populations. Specifically, the lab has uncovered a critical role for antiviral cytokines (type I interferons, IFNα/β) and IFNα/β-stimulated genes (ISGs) in these antibody responses. Disrupting this pathway prior to RBC transfusion may promote transfusion safety by preventing hemolytic transfusion reactions. Learn more at Gibb Lab at Cedars-Sinai. Working under direct supervision, the Research Associate I will perform a variety of routine experimental protocols and procedures to support the objectives of one or more laboratory research projects in a specific area of research. Assists in general laboratory activities, including maintenance of reagents and stocking of supplies. Files and monitors documents. The RA I will be able to perform routine cellular, micro-and molecular biology procedures including, but not limited to Western, Northern blot, DNA/RNA, PCR, protein extraction, cell culture, Immunohistochemistry, and staining. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

Perform a variety of routine experimental protocols and procedures.
Support the objectives of one or more laboratory research projects.
Perform general laboratory activities, including maintenance of reagents and stocking of supplies.
File and monitor documents.
Perform routine cellular, micro- and molecular biology procedures including, but not limited to Western, Northern blot, DNA/RNA, PCR, protein extraction, cell culture, Immunohistochemistry, and staining.

Responsibilities

Keeps accurate and detailed project records of experiments and results.
May assist with animal husbandry.
Maintains lab equipment and related records.
Transports, processes and logs samples.
Maintains computer database with relevant clinical information.
Performs lab maintenance duties, including glassware cleaning and sterilization.
Maintains stocks of general lab materials, and places orders for lab equipment and supplies in a timely manner.
Assists new students and fellows at the laboratory.
Assists in the operation of specialized equipment and machinery.
Observes and complies with safety standards and procedures.
