Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Research Associate - Department of Oncology at its Detroit campus location. This role involves performing laboratory-based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research, designing and performing experiments, and recruiting participants. The associate will also participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with guidelines, and assisting staff with experiments. Communication with the principal investigator and postdoctoral scholars/fellows on research status is key. The position also entails collecting and logging laboratory results, clinical outcomes, and/or survey data, evaluating and performing data analysis using various visual aids, and proofreading research data for accuracy. The Research Associate will prepare and present research results at conferences, summarize data for journal submittal, write scientific manuscripts, and fact-check documents. Maintenance of laboratory work areas, including routine equipment maintenance, ordering supplies, and maintaining workstation cleanliness, is also required. Additionally, this role provides scientific, operational, and supervisory support for a clinical and population science research program focused on improving care and resources for cancer survivors and their loved ones. This includes overseeing day-to-day progress across funded projects, such as a psychoeducational intervention for LGBTQ+ cancer survivors and their caregivers and the adaptation of educational resources into an interactive online curriculum. Specific responsibilities include supervising a Research Assistant and helping oversee students, interventionists, and other personnel; managing regulatory processes (PRMC and IRB submissions, amendments, continuing reviews); maintaining document management systems and version control; managing interventionist training and interface; supporting intervention and curriculum development; contributing to qualitative and quantitative data analysis; supporting manuscript, abstract, and presentation preparation; and assisting with grant proposal development and submission. The Research Associate will serve as a key liaison among the Principal Investigator, research staff, community partners, and collaborators, exercising independent judgment in coordinating research operations and advancing scientific priorities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Advanced knowledge, predominantly intellectual in character, in a field of science or learning acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.
  • Minimum 2 years of job-related experience
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to analyze, summarize and interpret research findings in reports and communicate results.
  • Knowledge of scientific integrity principles.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment.
  • Microsoft office software skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research.

  • Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required.
  • Order and organize required research supplies and records.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Provide scientific, operational, and supervisory support for a program of clinical and population science research focused on improving care and resources for cancer survivors and their loved ones.
  • Oversee day-to-day progress across the lab's portfolio of funded projects, including a psychoeducational intervention for LGBTQ+ cancer survivors and their caregivers and the adaptation of educational resources into an interactive online curriculum.
  • Supervise the Research Assistant and help oversee students, interventionists, and other temporary or as-needed personnel contributing to the lab's work.
  • Manage regulatory processes, including Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee (PRMC) and Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions, amendments, and continuing reviews.
  • Maintain document management systems and version control across study materials and datasets.
  • Manage interventionist training and interface.
  • Support intervention and curriculum development.
  • Contribute to qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
  • Support the preparation of manuscripts, conference abstracts, and presentations.
  • Assist with the development and submission of grant proposals to sustain and expand the lab's research program.
