About The Position

This is a contract role for a Research Associate in Analytical Development. The position involves supporting Vertex’s preclinical, clinical, and next-generation cell therapy programs by performing routine cell culture and analytical testing. The role requires providing analytical testing support for cell-based assays, assisting with automated runs, and performing sample testing using various techniques. The associate will also coordinate sample and reagent logistics, maintain documentation, and ensure lab organization and safety compliance. The position is primarily Monday to Friday with occasional off-schedule days and potential for second shift coverage. Flexibility to travel between sites within a 2.0-mile distance is required. The role emphasizes being a strong team player, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Cell & Molecular Biology, or related discipline with BS 0-2 years experience or MS with 0 years experience
  • Excellent pipetting skills.
  • Strong knowledge of aseptic cell culture technique.
  • Experience with or understanding robotic liquid handers (Hamilton or other) and their operating software (Fluent Gx, VENUS, or other) for automated sample preparation.
  • Ability to follow SOPs and carry out cell culture assays.
  • Excellent communication skills and is effectively able to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and good attention to detail.
  • Possess standard lab safety regulations and work in GLP like laboratory environment
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Word to perform tasks as
  • Able to perform successfully under pressure while prioritizing and handling multiple projects or priorities within required timelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant industry experience in the biologics or cell and gene therapy space.
  • Has experience culturing multiple different cell types including but not limited to stem cells, primary cells and cell lines.
  • Industry experience in cell and gene therapy space.
  • Experience with sample management and ELN/LIMS systems.
  • Experience working with pluripotent/hematopoietic stem cells.
  • Knowledge of automation tools

Responsibilities

  • Carry out routine cell culture both manually and automated of primary cells, stem cells and other mammalian cell lines to support analytical testing for Vertex’s preclinical, clinical and next generation cell therapy programs.
  • Provide analytical testing support for cell-based assays like cell count and viability assay, high throughput fluorescence cell-based assay and flow cytometry assay using automation tools like liquid handlers, flow cytometers and high content microscopes.
  • Assist analytical development teams with setting up, monitoring, and successfully completing daily automated runs and integrated systems and continuously monitor the health of automation systems and evaluate their efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Perform sample testing for analytical development team by using a variety of techniques; (e.g- Cell Culture, Flow Cytometry, ELISA, PCR.)
  • Coordinate shipment handling, and reagents from internal and external sources and track inventory for samples and reagents as needed for several projects.
  • Support Monday to Friday with occasional off-schedule days, and second shift/late evening coverage as required for process and analytical development teams on several assays as required and flexible to travel between sites within 2.0 mile distance.

  • Maintain excellent written documentation of completed experiment (ELN) and maintain knowledge share systems (MS-Teams and share points).
  • Ability to follow and understand SOPs and review protocols or reports as needed along with good analytical understanding for data interpretation.
  • Assist with lab organization and compliance with lab safety protocol and perform other duties as assigned.
