The Hussman Institute is currently seeking a full time Research Associate 2 to work in Miami. The Research Associate 2, SOM contributes to the University’s research activities under the supervision of senior staff. Moreover, the incumbent understands, interprets, and complies with research policies and protocols. This position involves performing specialized and complex experiments/studies, participating in the publication of research results, and advancing expertise through education, training, and research. The role may also involve writing extramural grants/proposals, collecting, preparing, analyzing, dissecting, and evaluating specimens and tissue cultures, and operating sensitive laboratory equipment. Additionally, the incumbent will perform calculations for research test results, photography, and dark room processing, and participate in training sessions and workshops. Adherence to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguarding of University assets is expected. Department-specific functions include collecting information and data through observation, experimentation, and operating technical laboratory instruments, preparing tissue and specimens for complex procedures, and devising experimental techniques. The Research Associate 2 will confer with the principal investigator on research plans, results interpretation, and manuscript preparation. Key responsibilities include designing, performing, analyzing, and interpreting DNA genotyping experiments, identifying and ordering supplies, keeping inventory logs, maintaining databases, and training new laboratory personnel. Operation of various lab equipment such as centrifuges, liquid handling robots, PCR blocks and scanners is required. Molecular techniques include PCR, SNP genotyping, agarose gel electrophoresis, and tissue culture. The role also involves analyzing data for quality and consistency, troubleshooting equipment and protocols, preparing progress reports, and demonstrating the ability to learn new techniques and standard operating protocols. Reviewing laboratory methods manuals, scientific journals, and other literature for applicable research information is also part of the role.
