About The Position

Temporary Research Assistants in the Systems Design Lab will support research initiatives, simulation development, design and prototyping, preparation of academic materials, and instructional support within the Department of Mathematics and Systems Engineering. Students will gain experience in systems engineering methods, applied research, and professional dissemination of results.

Requirements

  • Major: Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or related STEM field.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
  • Successful completion of laboratory safety training prior to starting duties.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical proficiency in modeling/simulation software (MATLAB, Arena, or equivalent) preferred.
  • CAD and/or prototyping experience (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, 3D printing) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with ongoing research initiatives in systems engineering and design.
  • Develop and refine simulations, models, and case studies for research and instructional use.
  • Review, test, and update systems engineering examples and classroom materials.
  • Contribute to the design, prototyping, and manufacturing of diverse systems using lab resources (e.g., CAD, 3D printing, basic fabrication tools).
  • Collect, analyze, and document experimental and design validation data.
  • Assist with drafting, editing, and formatting research publications, technical reports, and conference submissions.
  • Prepare supporting materials for academic conferences (e.g., posters, slides, presentation visuals).
  • Participate in lab meetings and research discussions, contributing ideas and feedback.
  • Provide support in reviewing and correcting selected in-class exercises as assigned by supervising faculty.
  • Help maintain the Systems Design Lab space and ensure compliance with laboratory safety practices.
