About The Position

The Zero-carbon Energy systems Research and Optimization Laboratory (ZERO Lab) at the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, led by Professor Jesse Jenkins, is seeking a temporary research assistant. This role supports the lab’s energy systems modeling research, focusing on improving and applying optimization-based macro-energy systems models. The goal is to evaluate and optimize low-carbon energy technologies, guide investment and research in innovative energy technologies, and generate insights for energy and climate policy and planning decisions. This position is ideal for individuals interested in the modeling of complex energy systems and evaluating technologies that will guide investment, research, and policy towards a net-zero emissions future. It also offers opportunities to develop research skills and receive professional mentorship, potentially aiding in graduate program applications.

Requirements

  • Familiarity with the Julia programming language and JuMP package for mathematical programming.
  • Experience in optimization methods and applied energy system modeling, particularly macro-scale energy systems
  • Strong technical writing abilities
  • Comfort in an interdisciplinary research environment
  • Organization and note taking skills

Nice To Haves

  • General knowledge of data centers and their impacts on power systems

Responsibilities

  • Performing modeling and analysis using the GenX electricity system planning model, including assessment of the impacts of data centers on electricity market prices, new capacity entry, and emissions
  • Modification of GenX software code and model formulation as required
  • Writing one or more publications summarizing research for journal submission and dissemination as working paper(s)
