About The Position

This position provides technical support in the teaching laboratories for the Cellular, Anatomical and Physiological (CAPS) undergraduate program, specifically for CAPS 303 and CAPS 431. The role involves maintaining and preparing lab spaces, equipment, and chemical materials. The work is performed in a wet lab setting and supports students in this environment. The position reports to the CAPS Program Directors and takes direction from course instructors for specific courses. Administrative matters are coordinated through the Director of Administration.

Requirements

High school graduation
Some additional training in a related field
A minimum of two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Effective oral and written communication skills
Interpersonal and organizational skills
Ability to work independently
Ability to exercise good judgment
Accuracy, care and attention to detail

Nice To Haves

BSc in physiology, cell biology and/or a related life science field
Experience in a laboratory setting
Knowledge of chemical & biohazard safety procedures
First aid training
Proven ability to learn new techniques
Demonstrated good practical laboratory skills

Responsibilities

Provide technical support for CAPS 303, CAPS 431 laboratory courses and other CAPS courses as required.
Maintain research equipment in the lab, ensuring it is in good condition and stored safely.
Prepare lab stations with equipment, solutions, and materials prior to each lab session.
Attend run-through sessions with course teaching assistants (TAs).
Prepare laboratory materials, media, reagents, stains, buffers, etc., for academic sessions and teaching labs.
Dispense and aliquot reagents and supplies.
Set up electrophysiological recording and/or other equipment for each lab.
Attend labs to refresh materials, troubleshoot equipment, and ensure students follow safety protocols.
Clean the lab and prepare all equipment after each class for the next session.
Collect used glassware and biohazard wastes from the CAPS teaching lab.
Sort and load collected glassware in the autoclave for cleaning.
Sterilize, scrub, rinse glassware, load racks for the autoclave, run the autoclave, and transfer materials to the dryer.
Inventory and order chemical supplies, consumables, and other lab acquisitions.
Pick up and autoclave biohazards for decontamination.
Prepare a master binder/digital notebook of lab course exercises, including pre-lab preparation and materials for CAPS 303 and 431.
Assist in the development of new laboratory exercises.
In summer term, carry out equipment maintenance and initiate upgrades.
Maintain and renew biosafety and chemical safety protocols.
Update computer hardware and software, and liaise with AD Instruments.
Perform other related duties as needed.
