About The Position

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Bioinformatics Technician will perform and analyze the results of data analysis pipelines and data management systems. This role specifically involves the analysis of DNA and RNA sequencing data generated from multiple ongoing laboratory projects. The technician will be responsible for developing and maintaining bioinformatics pipelines and applying innovative computational and statistical methods. The individual will report directly to Dr. Horwitz (PI) weekly and will also collaborate with senior graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows whose projects will be supported by the data analysis. Initially, the role will be under close supervision, with an expectation to work with minimal supervision once proficiency is established.

Requirements

  • High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in R, command line, and cloud computing.
  • At least two years of experience in bioinformatics.
  • Ability to work independently on multiple projects in the lab.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Must be able to follow and carry out instructions from PI.
  • Must be able to carry out responsibilities independently.
  • Interest and enthusiasm for scientific research.

Nice To Haves

  • BSc in Virology, Immunology, or similar discipline.
  • Minimum two years of experience operating in a research laboratory.
  • Comfortable with spreadsheets, word processing, grant and report writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and complete assignments without ongoing direction.
  • Good interpersonal and practical laboratory skills.
  • Ability to calculate molarities for chemical solutions.
  • Expertise in immunological assays.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and analyze the results of data analysis pipelines and data management systems.
  • Analyze DNA and RNA sequencing data.
  • Develop and maintain bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Apply innovative computational and statistical methods.
  • Provide bioinformatics support for RNAseq data analysis.
  • Present at group meetings.
  • Transfer knowledge of new protocols and procedures to incoming team members and assist in their instruction.
