About The Position

The Wistar Institute is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to support the Imaging Shared Resource, a centralized core facility providing advanced imaging technologies and services to investigators both across the institute and externally. The candidate will play a critical role in the daily operation of imaging platforms, user training and support, experimental execution, and image data analysis. This position offers hands-on exposure to cutting-edge microscopy and preclinical imaging technologies in a collaborative research environment focused on cancer, immunology, and infectious disease research.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a science-related field (e.g., biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering).
  • General experience with microscopy, including confocal and/or widefield imaging systems, or experience with preclinical imaging modalities.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with bioimage analysis.
  • Familiarity with live-cell imaging techniques.
  • Experience working with small animals (mice) in a barrier facility environment
  • Prior exposure to core facility or shared resource environments.
  • Interest in imaging technologies supporting cancer, immunology, or infectious disease research.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of imaging instruments.
  • Support operation of confocal, widefield, live-cell, and whole-slide imaging systems.
  • Assist with preclinical imaging platforms, including ultrasound, IVIS Spectrum CT, and small-animal radiation systems.
  • Train new users on imaging instrumentation and best practices.
  • Provide technical assistance during imaging experiments.
  • Ensure safe, proper, and efficient instrument use by researchers.
  • Perform imaging experiments and assist investigators with experimental setup.
  • Conduct image processing and quantitative analysis using commercial and open-source bioimage analysis software.
  • Maintain high-performance image analysis workstations.
  • Interface with vendors for instrument service and ordering of supplies.
  • Assist with lab organization, inventory, and documentation.
  • Maintain detailed records related to instrument usage and experiments.
