The appointment is shared equally between two projects: one directed by Dr. Rosenthal and one directed by Dr. Diaz Quiroz. The initial appointment is for two years, with a possible extension of up to one year based on job performance. The position provides an opportunity to apply molecular, genetic, and histological approaches to emerging model organisms, with training across research programs including environmental regulation of RNA editing and the neural control of limb regeneration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in biology or an equivalent area.
  • Prior experience working in a research lab.
  • Detail-oriented approach and meticulous recordkeeping.
  • Applicants within three years of receiving their undergraduate degree must provide an undergraduate transcript.

Nice To Haves

  • Significant experience in molecular biology, histology, or animal husbandry.
  • Embryo microinjection, such as with CRISPR-Cas systems.
  • PCR and basic molecular biology skills.
  • Cryosectioning of tissue samples.
  • Slide staining, including immunostaining and in situ hybridization.

Responsibilities

  • Support genetic studies on squid and amphipods, including generating CRISPR knockouts of RNA-editing-related genes in Euprymna berryi and circatidal-clock-related genes in Parhyale hawaiiensis.
  • Provide husbandry, care, and maintenance for Parhyale cultures.
  • Collect and microinject embryos with CRISPR-Cas9 and other reagents to produce genetically modified animals.
  • Genotype, cross, and maintain injected animals to establish defined lines.
  • Help characterize the role of neuropeptides during limb regeneration in axolotls and mice.
  • Process and section tissue samples from regenerating limbs.
