About The Position

The Research Assistant II position in the Center for Asthma Research will process diverse human-study biospecimens, including work with cultured human airway epithelial cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The ideal candidate will have prior experience working in a laboratory processing biospecimens and a strong understanding of standard laboratory processes. Responsibilities include biospecimen processing, tracking, running assays, database entry per protocol, organization and inventory management, and biospecimen quality assessment. The role also involves training, preparing materials, and presenting updates at lab staff meetings. The position is based in a three-person lab embedded within a larger multidisciplinary research team and requires the ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Under moderate supervision, process human biospecimens with documentation of chain of custody
  • Conduct and evaluate experiments and assays
  • Understand and follow biospecimen processing and experimental protocols (tissue culture, etc.)
  • Record, compile, interpret, and communicate data/results
  • Follow VUMC safety protocols (may include use of combustibles, toxic material, and/or carcinogens)
  • Perform calculations involving molarity, % solutions, and serial dilutions
  • Prepare, operate and troubleshoot equipment in experimental procedures
  • Read and follow all equipment manuals
  • Ensure laboratory is prepared for experiments
  • Maintain inventories
  • Maintain sterile conditions as required
  • Prepare reagents
  • Demonstrate an understanding of acceptable procedures and techniques
  • Recognize problems and suggest solutions
  • Assist in modifications as directed
  • Provide appropriate written documentation of biospecimens and experiments
  • Prepare preliminary research progress reports
  • Summarize test results appropriately and prepare at laboratory meetings
  • Will require rotation to cover one Saturday a month, requiring 1-3 hours of work depending upon number of biospecimens and airway epithelial cells to be processed
