Research Assistant II - Neurogenetics Research

Kennedy Krieger InstituteBaltimore, MD

About The Position

The Research Assistant II assists the PI with scientific studies to elucidate the cellular mechanisms of neural network dysfunction in genetic models of neurodevelopmental disorders. The Research Assistant is able to read and understand scientific literature, carry out experiments, work collaboratively, plan experiments, analyze data, draft the manuscript and make presentations to others about the work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a science related field such as biology, neuroscience, psychology, biomedical engineering, computer science, or physics.
  • Previous laboratory training and experience in any field of science is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in MATLAB, R and Phyton is preferred.
  • Training in animal surgical techniques, EEG placement and post-operative care is preferred.
  • Two years’ experience with tissue culture, molecular biology, is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tissue culture experiments using iPSC derived neural cells.
  • Use methods such as fluorescent in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, Ca2+ imaging, and MEA recording.
  • Conduct experiments in rodents, using surgical techniques, post-operative care, behavioral studies and euthanasia, in accordance with IACUC-approved protocols and the Guide for the Care and Use of Experimental Animals.
  • Manage the colony of transgenic mice, obtaining samples for genotyping, maintaining accurate records of genotypes and breeding, and managing supply of breeders and mice required for experiments.
  • Use computerized microscopy and image analysis systems to collect experimental data; analyze data with statistics packages such as R and GraphPad Prism.
  • Design and plan experiments, in coordination with the PI, using above/other methods.
  • Work cooperatively with others in the laboratory to carry out collaborative research.
