About The Position

OVCARE is a world leading, dynamic and innovative research program that brings together diverse talent to advance gynecologic cancer research and improve health outcomes for patients. We are looking for a Technologist Lead, Gynecologic Cancer Tissue Bank Core for our state-of-the-art, custom lab in the heart of Vancouver. The successful candidate will play an instrumental role in leading activities of our biobank. We are looking for a self-motivated and creative problem solver who thrives in a fast-paced collaborative environment. A keen eye with an attention to detail is needed to ensure our researchers are well supported and for the smooth day-to-day operations of the biobank. You will be working together with a dynamic team, including laboratory technologists, clinical informatics and data scientists, on coordinating various biobanking services needs like tissue processing, data collection and management, upkeep of common lab spaces, and equipment maintenance.

  • Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute.
  • A diploma as a registered technologist or a BSc degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Direct experience in basic molecular biology techniques an asset.
  • Willingness to learn new research skills.
  • Biobanking experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Leads day-to-day wet lab operations of the biobank in collaboration with the Clinical Research Manager and Data Manager on overall biobank oversight
  • Processes biological tissue, fluids, and study-specific samples for storage
  • Maintains accurate records of biospecimen inventory, processing, and storage using the biobank’s online database platform, and performs routine data entry
  • Fulfills internal and external researcher requests for biospecimens by performing look-ups, retrieving specimens, and preparing materials for release in accordance with approved request procedures.
  • Identifies workflow improvements and collaborates with team members and lab users on implementation
  • Maintains and updates SOPs; documents and evaluates best practices and contributes to SOP development
  • Prepares cryostat and vibratome tissue sections
  • Performs routine stains (e.g. H&E)
  • Performs immunohistochemical stains of tissue sections.
  • Conducts standard molecular biology techniques including DNA, RNA and protein extraction of tissues
  • Performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment; supports implementation of new equipment and provides training to team members on use
  • Trains and orients co-op students on biobank technical procedures, protocols, and safety practices.
  • Supports compliance with regulatory and ethical requirements including CTRNet ROPs, UBC REB, TCPS2, and applicable BC Cancer/PHSA policies
  • Troubleshoots technical issues with established protocols and equipment
  • Ensures common laboratory spaces are maintained to operational and safety standards
  • Maintains consumable inventories for the biobank and common lab spaces
  • Maintains a safe and productive work environment and lab facility, meeting regulatory requirements
  • Performs other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification
