About The Position

General Motors is seeking a highly motivated research intern to support advanced electrification and propulsion research within the Energy and Propulsion Systems Research organization. The intern will contribute to the development of advanced motor topologies, control methods, and artificial-intelligence-enabled engineering tools for future hybrid-electric and battery-electric vehicles. The role combines analytical work, simulation, laboratory experimentation, and hands-on testing in a collaborative research environment. The position is hybrid and categorized as an internship. The successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, Michigan, at least three times per week and participate in onsite laboratory or hardware-testing activities when required. Start dates are May 24, 2027, or June 14, 2027. The role does not provide immigration-related sponsorship. The position is subject to export control restrictions and requires the successful candidate to be a U.S. Person, defined as a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee, or refugee.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited advanced degree (MS or PhD) program in engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in electric machines, controls, power electronics, vehicle electrification, artificial intelligence, or a related technical area.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid environment and participate in onsite laboratory or hardware-testing activities when required.
  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) because the position is subject to export control restrictions.
  • Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with electric-machine theory, motor drives, control systems, power electronics, or circuit design.
  • Experience with simulation or modeling tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, finite-element analysis software, or comparable engineering tools.
  • Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, C/C++, or a similar language.
  • Experience applying AI or machine learning to engineering, controls, design optimization, or data analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory instrumentation, dynamometer testing, motor testing, or power-electronics hardware.
  • Familiarity with HEV or EV propulsion systems.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate advanced electric-machine topologies, including rare-earth-free synchronous reluctance machines, induction machines, and switched reluctance machines.
  • Develop, evaluate, and improve control strategies for electric drive systems.
  • Apply artificial intelligence and machine-learning methods to electric-machine design, controls, modeling, diagnostics, or performance optimization.
  • Support simulation, modeling, analysis, and concept development for HEV and EV propulsion systems.
  • Participate in drive-system testing, laboratory experiments, and validation of proof-of-concept hardware.
  • Contribute to power-electronics and circuit-design activities as needed by project assignments.
  • Analyze technical results and communicate findings through presentations, reports, and other research documentation.
  • Collaborate with researchers, engineers, laboratory staff, and cross-functional project teams.
  • Follow applicable laboratory, electrical-safety, data-management, and intellectual-property practices.
