About The Position

The Department of Animal Science is searching for two Research Aides. The primary purpose for these positions are to conduct both commercial farm-based and campus-based research. The incumbents will be responsible for data collection on both commercial farm-based and campus-based research, communicating, and coordinating with other members of the PI research group, and completing tasks beyond field work in a prompt manner. Typical responsibilities would include collecting samples, coordinating with farm staff when conducting research, recording, and processing data into databases, preparing summaries of data, maintaining lab equipment and sample collection materials, and ordering supplies. The Animal Science Research Aide will support ongoing research focused on methane emissions in livestock, with an emphasis on nutritional and management-based mitigation strategies. This internship is designed to complement the intern’s academic program by providing hands-on experience in animal science research, laboratory analysis, and scientific communication.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and up to 1-year relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Ability to work safely around large animals.
  • Flexible in time management, shifts may be split or at odd hours.
  • Ability to work in field locations that can be difficult to access.
  • Must be able to navigate uneven terrain at times.
  • Ability to lift less than 10 pounds.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proven experience in communicating effectively, both written and oral.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong observational skills.
  • Ability to work independently once provided sufficient direction.
  • Ability to work alone or with a team and problem-solve as needed.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position.
  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted NYS driver’s license and be cleared to drive for university business.
  • Experience working directly with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or related field.
  • Experience working around bovine.
  • Participation in maintenance and operation of methane measurement systems.
  • Experience conducting web-based literature review or research.
