About The Position

Metroland Media is seeking an energetic, keen reporter with a degree in journalism or equivalent for a unique and exceptional opportunity as part of Canada’s Local Journalism Initiative. This temporary full-time contract position will focus on producing 5-7 stories weekly for muskokaregion.com, with potential for syndication to other Metroland publications. The role involves covering civic journalism in the Huntsville and Lake of Bays areas, including local councils, school boards, law enforcement, and government agencies. While working virtually, the reporter must be available for in-person interviews and photography within the designated areas. The salary is paid by Metroland, with partial funding from the Government of Canada.

Requirements

  • A journalism degree, diploma or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, deadline driven and demanding environment.
  • Strong interviewing, social media and online journalism skills.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Proven news judgment and a strong work ethic.
  • Effective organizational skills, ability to manage time and prioritize tasks appropriately.
  • Photography skills.
  • Must have access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s license.

  • Curious, team-oriented individual that can build professional relationships with team members and sources.

Responsibilities

  • Produce a minimum of 5-7 stories weekly.
  • Cover civic journalism in the Huntsville and Lake of Bays areas.
  • Cover Huntsville, Lake of Bays and Muskoka District councils, school boards, law enforcement, courts, fire departments, Crown corporations, government agencies, federal Parliament or provincial legislatures.
  • Complete interviews and take photographs in the area.
  • Work independently in a virtual newsroom.
