About The Position

Together, we are building a sustainable future for local news. KGW is looking for a creative, driven and curious news reporter who can shoot and edit his or her own stories. Known in our newsroom as a “multi-skilled journalist,” MSJs are a key part of our newsroom’s coverage on both broadcast and digital platforms. We are looking for a candidate who isn’t afraid to tackle complicated stories, who will hold the powerful accountable, and who gets excited at the prospect of creating great journalism. The ideal candidate will pitch smart stories and tell them in way that is both creative and engaging. Most stories will be same-day turns, while other times you’ll be given more time to execute your vision. You can expect to work solo many days, although there are ample opportunities to work with a photographer, especially on breaking news. We are also looking for someone who is excited about the future of local news. We are looking for a candidate who embraces the digital future of our industry and can show examples of strong work on digital, streaming and social media platforms. This role is a full-time, non-exempt position represented by SAG-AFTRA. The position may include weekend shifts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field
  • Strong understanding of journalism ethics and best practices with a minimum of three years of experience in broadcast journalism or a related field
  • Experience with shooting video, video editing, and web content management systems
  • Ability to generate creative, engaging, content-driven live shots
  • Strong social media skills and presence
  • Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events
  • Ability to work under time pressure and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of ENPS, Edius, Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop a plus

Responsibilities

  • Report, write, shoot and edit news stories for broadcast and digital platforms.
  • Use creative production techniques such as graphics and new forms of media to enhance stories.
  • Consistently pitch strong story ideas.
  • Maintain the highest journalistic standards in every story you cover. We expect you’ll report stories accurate and honestly, treat sources with fairness and empathy, hold yourself accountable when you make a mistake.
