About The Position

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Housing Repair, the Repairer is responsible for the general maintenance and repair work of residential buildings on campus, including office equipment and furnishings.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Possession of a valid driver's license in good standing issued by state of residence is required.
  • Successful completion of vocational training or apprenticeship program.
  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in work involving the inspection, repair, and general maintenance of household, office, and other equipment, fixtures, fittings, appliances, machinery, furnishings, and buildings.
  • Knowledgeable of the methods and problems involved in inspecting, repairing, constructing, and maintaining buildings, walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, ventilators, window cords, sashes, screens, locks and other equipment.
  • Ability to analyze general repair work, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods to complete assigned work; ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions and assignments.
  • Ability to efficiently and safely make general repairs and to do maintenance work using standard tools and equipment including, but not limited to, a variety of power tools, and other specialized tools and machinery.
  • Ability to work from electronic work order system and/or manual recording.
  • Ability to maintain simple records of materials used, work completed, and time spent.

Responsibilities

  • Works independently or as a member of a housing services group in the repair and maintenance of water, drainage waste, toilet bowls, wash basins, and urinals; and radiators, and other types of basic repairs to plumbing, appliances, and machinery. Will be required to assist trades wherever needed.
  • Works independently or as a member of a housing services group in the painting of wood, metal, brick, and cement walls, floors, and ceilings of the interior and exterior buildings; basic repairs of cabinets, desks, chairs, and other furnishings and equipment; Repair and maintenance of buildings, office furniture, screens, storm sashes, frames, windows, ceilings, partitions, and other types of carpentry work. Will be required to assist trades wherever needed.
  • Works independently or as a member of a housing services group in the basic repairs and maintenance of walls, ceilings, interior and exterior brickwork, tile floors, drains, cement and concrete floors, and other types of masonry, plastering, and stone work to include mixing, placing, and finishing concrete. Must repair or replace VCT floor tiles, ceiling tiles, and stair treads in all areas needed. Repair, adjust or replace door closers and hardware. Will be required to assist trades wherever needed.
  • Works independently or as a member of a housing services group in the installation, inspection, repair, and maintenance of cables, wiring, motors, pumps, refrigerators, radios, and other types of electrical equipment, telephone lines, and other types of appliance repairs. Will maintain, repair or replace lighting components, ballasts, lamps, lenses, and fixtures as needed; Repairs and maintenance of copper leaders and gutters, roof drains, including the operations of flashing, and weatherproofing products. Responsible for basic repairs to kitchen pots, steamers, cans, pails, and other kitchen and ventilators, air ducts, and lighting.
  • Reports all observed repair needs to supervisor in a timely fashion. Independently makes repairs when possible. Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials, supplies, and tools. Will be required to learn and utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the College. Tour all areas of responsibility and record items needing repairs so work orders are generated timely and accurately. Maintains a positive relationship with members of the campus community.
  • Receives work orders from Supervisor, which outlines the work to be done, in what time frame, and methods to be used in order to accomplish the job according to specific instruction; Receives minimal callbacks from clients; Maintains accurate records of equipment used, work completed, and time spent.
  • Respond to calls for emergency assistance and overtime, both emergency and scheduled, pursuant to departmental protocol. Carries departmental radio at all times to receive calls for services and to request assistance. Ensures all work areas and shop areas are clean and clear of debris and equipment. Ensures that cleanup is completed prior to the end of the workday and/or job assignment. Complies with college occupational health, safety, security, and environmental regulations and procedures. Attends all required training. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
