About The Position

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Renewable Energy SCADA Team Leader for our Irvine, CA office. The Renewable Energy SCADA Team Leader will lead WSP’s SCADA, communications, and controls engineering capability across utility-scale solar, wind, BESS, and hybrid renewable energy projects. This role is responsible for technical leadership, team development, and delivery excellence across the full project lifecycle — from early development through commissioning and operations. The position plays a key role in strengthening WSP’s renewable energy engineering platform by establishing consistent SCADA standards, scalable delivery models, and high-quality client outcomes. Provides leadership within a sector of organization to ensure SCADA engineering subject matter, technical deliverables, infrastructure projects and programs are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry and company standards for design, safety, and functionality. Responsible for SME innovation and administration, ensuring corporate compliance with all Local, State, and Federal engineering, construction, and safety regulations, and providing pragmatic direction to address current and future challenges in a rapidly-changing and complex business climate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • 10+ years of relevant post education experience in SCADA, controls and communication for renewable energy, power generation, or substation.
  • Demonstrated experience with: Utility scale renewable energy facilities (Solar, BESS, Wind and/or hybrid projects), SCADA system architecture and integration, Communication networks (fiber, Ethernet, serial, wireless).
  • Strong understanding of: Plant level and substation SCADA systems, Control system integration and data acquisition, Commissioning and operational requirements.
  • Proven experience leading technical teams and coordinating across disciplines and departments.
  • Working knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements, and the business impact upon the organization.
  • Works independently and provides guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Thoughtful leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Tactical lateral thinking and strong analytical skills with attention to detail and prioritization of responsibilities in a pressure work environment.
  • Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including senior management, clients, regulators, and company-wide staff, including those with whom no formal hierarchical relationship exists.
  • Solid track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in managing the review and approval of documents and discipline-specific deliverables, certifications, processes, and plans in a multi-project environment is highly desirable.
  • Experience supporting projects through construction and commissioning.
  • Familiarity with common SCADA protocols and standards (e.g., IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus).
  • Experience working with EPC’s, utilities, owners or system operators.

Responsibilities

  • Lead SCADA, communications, and controls engineering for renewable energy projects through all design phases (conceptual, 30%, 60%, 90%, IFC).
  • Oversee development of: SCADA and communications architectures, Network and fiber layouts, SCADA block diagrams and points lists, Integration of plant systems (generation assets, BESS, substations, met stations).
  • Provide senior technical review and oversight of project deliverables.
  • Ensure designs support reliable operations, maintainability, and long-term asset performance.
  • Support commissioning readiness, system integration, and operational handover activities.
  • Serve as WSP’s technical lead for SCADA and communications interfaces with Clients and owners, Utilities and ISOs, Equipment vendors and system integrators, Internal multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Coordinate data acquisition, control, and communications requirements across plant, substation, and grid interconnection systems.
  • Support workshops, design reviews, and technical discussions with project stakeholders.
  • Build, lead, and mentor a growing renewable SCADA and communications engineering team.
  • Establish and maintain technical standards, templates, and best practices for SCADA and communications design.
  • Implement consistent QA/QC processes across projects.
  • Ensure technical depth, knowledge sharing, and succession planning within the team.
  • Collaborate with WSP’s global teams and capability centers to support workload scalability and knowledge transfer.
  • Support proposals and pursuits by defining SCADA scope, level of effort, and technical approaches.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise during client engagements and project pursuits.
  • Contribute to the evolution of WSP’s renewable energy service offerings related to digital infrastructure, controls, and grid integration.
  • Participate in internal training, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
