About The Position

BluePearl Pet Hospital in Charlestown, MA is seeking a skilled Relief Veterinary Technician to join our Emergency & Critical Care team. This position offers a pay range of $24.50 - $49.00 per hour, dependent on experience and advancement through our competency assessment tool. Candidates with VTS credentialing are eligible for compensation commensurate with experience. Competitive shift differentials are offered for eligible hours worked during nights and weekends, based on a 4-hour minimum. For example, Mon-Fri 6pm to 8am and Sat-Sun 8am to 6pm receive a +$4.00 shift differential, while Sat-Sun 6pm to 8am receive a +$5.50 shift differential.

Requirements

  • Skilled Relief Veterinary Technician
  • Experience in Emergency & Critical Care
  • Proficiency in inducing, monitoring, and recovering anesthesia.
  • Ability to triage emergency cases and obtain vital signs.
  • Proficiency in digital radiography and patient positioning.
  • Complete understanding of normal patient vital signs.
  • Ability to obtain and interpret vital signs and alert veterinarians to changes.
  • Ability to identify patients at risk for arrest and initiate CPR.
  • Proficiency in medical math calculations, including CRIs.
  • Proficiency in administering medications via appropriate routes and duration.
  • Proficiency in performing phlebotomy and placing intravenous catheters.
  • Ability to place and maintain feeding tubes and central line catheters.
  • Passion for mentoring and training co-workers.
  • Patience and empathy to address client concerns.

Responsibilities

  • Induce, monitor and recover anesthesia in patients and use anesthesia/monitoring equipment.
  • Triage emergency cases as they arrive at the hospital including obtaining vitals such as temperature heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure.
  • Perform digital radiography using proper technique including proper positioning of patients.
  • Have a complete understanding of normal ranges of patient vital signs, including but not limited to heart and respiratory rate, temperature, blood pressure and oxygen saturation.
  • Obtain and interpret blood pressure and other vital signs and alert Veterinarian to changes and issues.
  • Identify patients at risk for arrest and initiate CPR.
  • Properly calculate medical math (including constant rate infusions) and administer medications via appropriate routes and duration.
  • Are proficient at performing phlebotomy and placing intravenous catheters in all peripheral vessels.
  • Place and maintain feeding tubes and central line catheters.
  • Have a passion for mentoring and training other co-workers.
  • Have patience and empathy to address client concerns.
