About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians shifts in two settings: Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. They are primarily located inside Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units.

Vetco Total Care hospitals offer preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. Facilities may include digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and fully equipped surgery suites. Hospital shifts do not include overnight or emergency on-call duties.

Relief veterinarians can schedule shifts online, choose from weekday and weekend hours, set their own rate for each shift, and continue practice activities outside Petco shifts. There is no minimum or maximum number of shifts required. An appointment-based model helps manage patient flow, and trained staff handle operations so veterinarians can focus on care. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, as well as a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all functions required during the shift, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• A DEA registration in good standing is required for relief shifts at Vetco Total Care full-service hospitals.
• Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during selected shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At vaccination clinics, provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At full-service hospitals, provide care that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
• Perform shift functions in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal mandates.
