About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians shifts in two settings: Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. Most are located in Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgery, and dental procedures. Hospital equipment includes digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and surgery suites with heated hydraulic tables and anesthesia monitoring. Licensed and trained hospital staff support care delivery, and there are no overnight or emergency on-call shifts.

Relief veterinarians can use flexible online scheduling, choose from weekday and weekend shifts, and set their own rate for each shift. There is no minimum or maximum shift requirement, and veterinarians may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts without agency fees. The appointment-based model is intended to manage patient flow and help veterinarians leave on time, while trained staff handle operations. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, plus a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• Professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics and/or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At Vaccination Clinics, provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At Vetco Total Care hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
• Perform the functions of assigned shifts in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal mandates.
