About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services relief veterinarians can work in Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. The role offers flexible online scheduling, with no minimum or maximum number of shifts, and weekday and weekend hours. Veterinarians set their own rate for each shift and may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, without agency fees. An appointment-based model helps manage patient flow, and trained staff handle operations so veterinarians can focus on patient care. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, as well as a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Vetco Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement. They do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. Most are located inside Petco stores, with some operating from mobile vans.

Vetco Total Care hospitals offer preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. Hospital equipment includes digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and surgery suites with heated hydraulic surgery tables and full anesthesia monitoring. These shifts do not require overnight or emergency on-call work.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• Professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.
• A DEA registration in good standing is required for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At vaccination clinics, provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At Vetco Total Care hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
• Perform shift functions requiring state-specific authorization, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• Comply with applicable local, state, and federal mandates.
