About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians work in two settings: Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency care, or illness care. Most are located within Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, supported by equipped surgery suites and diagnostic equipment. Hospital shifts do not include overnight or emergency on-call work.

Relief veterinarians can schedule shifts online, choose from weekday and weekend hours, and set their own rate for each shift. There is no minimum or maximum shift requirement, and veterinarians may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts without agency fees. An appointment-based model helps manage patient flow, and trained staff handle clinic operations so veterinarians can focus on care. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, as well as a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At vaccination clinics, perform basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At full-service hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
• Perform shift functions in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal mandates.
