About The Position

Under the supervision of the Lab Supervisor and the Department Manager, the Cardiology Technician I conducts and records electrocardiograms (ECG) according to established procedures. They are responsible for attaching and explaining ambulatory cardiac monitors and their use to patients, including instructing patients on proper activity and record-keeping during the monitored period. This role also involves maintaining patient data files and assisting the Supervisor in training staff and implementing Department policies and procedures. Employees must adhere to all Joint Commission Requirements and Service Standards of the Hospital(s).

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• One (1) year of directly related work experience.
• Ability to demonstrate customer service skills in interactions with all patients, families and staff, including high volume and stressful situations.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Ability to problem-solve effectively using appropriate resources.
• Is productive in workflow, skills and organization.
• Ability to provide care as needed and as described in the department’s policies and procedures.
• Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the job.
• Knowledge of basic nursing and medical terminology.
• Knowledge of cardiac monitoring methods, practices, and procedures.
• Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.
• Knowledge of protocols for patient records.
• Knowledge of role in emergency response.
• Skill in use of monitoring equipment including, but not limited to, electrocardiogram (ECG) equipment.
• BLS - Basic Life Support

Responsibilities

• Applies theoretical knowledge to identify and quantify recorded arrhythmias.
• Checks accuracy of analysis.
• Copies and faxes results to referring physician groups upon request.
• Hooks up Holter monitors and cardiac event monitors, instructing patient on the proper activity and record keeping.
• Is responsible for each ECG taken on nursing units (e.g. poor tracings, improper patient information).
• Maintains data files on monitored patients and inputs reports into a computer as needed.
• Maintains electrocardiogram machines, event monitors and necessary supplies.
• Occasionally interprets clinical results.
• Provides training for other employees.
• Records cardiograms from hospital in-patients and out-patients.
• Records interpretations of Holters in Electronic Medical Record system.
• Responds to emergency calls.
• Responsible for editing EKGs in the Tracemaster ECG system.
• Works with other departments to ensure quality ECG service is maintained.
