Release Train Engineer

McKesson•Columbus, OH

About The Position

The Release Train Engineer serves as the dedicated Shared Product Capabilities Value Stream facilitator at CoverMyMeds. The role enables alignment, execution, and continuous improvement across multiple teams and product value streams that rely on shared capabilities. Working within the CoverMyMeds SAFe Operating Model and Lean Portfolio Management framework, the Release Train Engineer establishes the operating cadence that supports work from strategy through delivery. The position applies expertise and independent judgment to coach teams and leaders, improve predictability, manage dependencies, address complex delivery challenges, and deliver value at scale. The role does not own product priorities, technical architecture, team-level delivery decisions, or people management. The Shared Product Capabilities team builds reusable capabilities for CoverMyMeds' Specialty, Retail, and Pharmacy & PBM product teams. These include a unified provider portal, medical prior authorization connectivity to payers, benefits verification, enrollments, consent, affordability, and AI-driven Next Best Action. The Release Train Engineer works across Product Management, Technology, User Experience, Data, portfolio partners, business leadership, peer Release Train Engineers, and value stream leaders to coordinate planning, execution, dependencies, and improvement. The role uses AI-assisted tools, analytics, and dashboards to support facilitation, scenario modeling, dependency management, and data-informed delivery decisions.

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent experience and typically 7+ years of relevant professional experience in Agile delivery, program delivery, product development, technology, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Agile teams in a scaled environment and leading large, cross-functional planning and execution events.
  • Strong working knowledge of SAFe, Lean, Scrum, Kanban, PI Planning, dependency management, flow, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Advanced facilitation, coaching, stakeholder management, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to develop practical approaches to complex problems, apply sound judgment with limited direction, anticipate change, and redirect efforts as needed.
  • Ability to influence without formal authority and communicate credibly with delivery teams, senior leaders, and cross-functional partners.
  • Strong systems thinking and ability to connect delivery patterns, risks, dependencies, and organizational outcomes.
  • Experience using Agile planning and collaboration tools such as Atlassian and Miro.
  • Demonstrated hands-on use of AI tools, such as AI assistants, agents, or custom prompts and skills, to improve delivery work including planning preparation, story and objective drafting, reporting, and analysis, with sound judgment about appropriate AI use and the need for human facilitation and review.

Nice To Haves

  • SAFe Release Train Engineer, SAFe Practice Consultant, SAFe Agilist, Certified ScrumMaster, Agile Coach, PMP, or comparable certification; relevant experience is valued alongside credentials.
  • Experience supporting healthcare technology products such as prior authorization, benefits verification, payer or EHR connectivity, medication access, or another healthcare delivery environment.
  • Experience with AI-assisted facilitation, predictive delivery insights, scenario modeling, or automation of Agile metrics and reporting.
  • Experience working in a product-led operating model or value stream environment spanning product, engineering, data, user experience, and business teams, particularly a shared-capability or platform value stream serving multiple product areas.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Operating Model Transformation Team and Product Operations to design, facilitate, and improve value stream and ART-level operating cadences, including PI Planning, ART Syncs, Scrum of Scrums, Product Owner Syncs, System Demos, Inspect & Adapt workshops, and PI execution reviews.
  • Recommend improvements to shared processes, artifacts, and cross-value-stream planning practices based on lessons from a cross-cutting value stream.
  • Establish an operating rhythm and lead large-scale cross-functional planning and execution events involving multiple teams, competing priorities, and real-time decision-making.
  • Prepare teams and leaders for PI Planning by aligning priorities, capacity, dependencies, risks, objectives, and backlog readiness; facilitate Program Board creation, planning alignment, confidence voting, risk ROAMing, and capture of committed and stretch PI objectives.
  • Support pre-planning activities that promote realistic sequencing, alignment, and committed delivery outcomes.
  • Make cross-team dependencies, risks, blockers, and impediments visible and actively managed; identify and address systemic bottlenecks, mediate cross-team conflicts and dependency trade-offs, and escalate issues that cannot be resolved at team level.
  • Partner with peer Release Train Engineers and value stream leaders to align cross-value-stream dependencies, shared team capacity, and integration milestones before and during each PI; make capacity demands visible, frame trade-offs with data, and bring them to the appropriate leaders for decisions.
  • Track performance, flow metrics, ART health, and delivery outcomes; use AI-enabled analytics and dashboards to identify patterns and bottlenecks, surface risks, and translate insights into actions and data-driven decisions.
  • Lead Inspect & Adapt workshops, retrospectives, problem-solving sessions, and improvement backlogs to strengthen ART health and delivery performance.
  • Coach teams and leaders on Lean-Agile principles, decentralized decision-making, and system-level thinking; share expertise and guide less experienced colleagues while enabling self-sustaining delivery systems rather than directly managing execution outcomes.
  • Connect Product Management, Technology, User Experience, Data, portfolio partners, and business leadership; align strategy, backlog priorities, and execution, maintain visibility into ART health and outcomes, and communicate delivery risks, dependencies, decisions, and improvement opportunities.
  • Use AI-assisted tools and predictive insights for facilitation, scenario modeling, dependency management, risk anticipation, sequencing, and decision-making during PI Planning and execution.
