About The Position

This position manages requests for medical record information from patients, third party payers and others through prompt and courteous service in a fast-paced, high volume, customer focused environment. May interact with customers in person or by telephone. The role involves processing requests in a timely and efficient manner within established timeline standards, maintaining quality and accuracy. Work involves hybrid medical records and understanding the complexity of record types and locations of various documents. The technician must maintain in-depth knowledge of all applicable state and federal laws, HIPAA privacy and security regulations, as well as enterprise policies and procedures pertaining to the release of protected health information, ensuring all disclosures are documented and in compliance. This role requires interpreting and adhering to legal requirements and established procedures that govern release of information, using professional medico-legal training in managing requests for information. It also involves critically analyzing, interpreting and applying laws and regulations to determine whether requests and authorizations are in compliance. The technician must maintain a thorough understanding of the definition and components of the legal medical record, and safeguard and protect the patient's right to privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patient's medical information, maintaining strict confidentiality of patient information in compliance with HIPAA and state and federal regulations. A practical knowledge of medical terminology including anatomy, physiology, and disease processes and general understanding of the health record is necessary. The role requires utilizing a wide variety of software and applications in order to fulfill requests, and the ability to prioritize and coordinate work in order to complete duties according to established timelines. The work is extremely detailed and requires a high rate of accuracy in order to meet legal requirements. The candidate must be able to interpret policies, procedures and choose appropriate action, with a thorough understanding of all functions that support the release of information process. Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with internal and external customers showing poise, tact and professionalism at all times. May perform other duties as assigned to support business needs.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in an Health Information Management (HIM) related field, or two years equivalent work experience required.
  • Must be able to keyboard proficiently.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous release of information experience preferred.
  • Prior experience in HIM Department related to record maintenance completion or release of information preferred.
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification preferred.
  • Possess practical knowledge of medical terminology including anatomy, physiology, and disease processes and general understanding of the health record.
