About The Position

The Polk County Circuit Court in Dallas, Oregon, is hiring a Release Assistance Officer/Criminal Floater. In this role, most of your time will be spent interviewing defendants in custody and determining which individuals, upon release, are most likely to appear in court, are unlikely to commit new offenses, and do not pose a threat to themselves or the community. You will be responsible for ensuring that pretrial defendants comply with their supervised release agreements and for gathering information to determine defendants’ eligibility for court appointed attorneys. You will occasionally testify in court regarding release decisions, compliance, and revocations. Additionally, you will cross-train on different court operations to assist as needed. Assigned tasks may be changed to accommodate workload and organizational needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or public administration, behavioral or social/human services, or a closely related field.
  • Four (4) years of experience in criminal justice or a court environment.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to four (4) years of experience that typically supports the knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
  • Law Enforcement Data Systems (LEDS) certification or ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Experience conducting interviews to obtain personal and/or financial information.
  • Experience communicating effectively, orally and in writing, with people in emotionally charged and stressful situations.
  • Experience communicating decisions regarding the approval or denial of benefits or services and the explanation of laws, rules, or regulations.
  • Experience using a personal computer to access and input information and complete various tasks.
  • Experience working in a court system, criminal justice, corrections, or other legal environment.
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation, including criminal history checks and be of good moral character.
  • Must complete the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's I-9 form within three days of hire.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and have authorization confirmed via E-Verify.

Responsibilities

  • Interviewing defendants in custody to determine release suitability based on court appearance likelihood, risk of new offenses, and community safety.
  • Ensuring pretrial defendants comply with supervised release agreements.
  • Gathering information to determine defendants' eligibility for court-appointed attorneys.
  • Occasionally testifying in court regarding release decisions, compliance, and revocations.
