Relay Technician Company: Beowulf Electricity and Data Location: Barker, NY Position Type: Full-Time (Non-Exempt) Compensation: $33.00 - $57.00 hourly (Based on experience, certifications, and qualifications) Are you an electrical protection expert ready to power the AI revolution? Located at our state-of-the-art facility on the shores of Lake Ontario in Barker, NY, our operations are rapidly scaling to support a 500MW AI and high-performance computing campus powered by two dedicated on-site substations that the Operations team is responsible for. We are seeking a Relay Technician with strong protection and control experience, exceptional troubleshooting abilities, and a safety-first mindset. Requirements

  • 3-7 years of experience as a Relay Technician, Protection & Control Technician, Substation Technician, or similar electrical protection role.
  • Working knowledge of protective relay systems, substation protection schemes, and electrical power system fundamentals.
  • Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, protection schematics, wiring diagrams, and electrical construction drawings.
  • Proven ability to diagnose complex electrical issues, analyze protection events, and implement effective corrective solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to create accurate technical reports and maintenance documentation.
  • Strong commitment to electrical safety practices, lockout/tagout procedures, and industry best practices.
  • Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, climb stairs and ladders, and occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with SEL, GE Multilin, ABB, Siemens, or similar protective relay platforms.
  • Experience supporting substations operating at medium- and high-voltage levels (34.5kV to 115kV+).
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, RTUs, metering equipment, and communications networks.
  • NETA Certification, Electrical Journeyman status, Associate's Degree in Electrical Technology, or related technical certifications.
  • Experience supporting utility, power generation, renewable energy, industrial manufacturing, or mission-critical data center facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform testing, calibration, commissioning, and maintenance of protective relays, control circuits, and associated substation equipment.
  • Analyze relay events, oscillography records, alarms, and fault data to rapidly identify root causes and restore system reliability.
  • Assist with maintenance, outage coordination, switching activities, and commissioning efforts associated with two on-site substations and campus electrical distribution systems.
  • Conduct end-to-end testing of protection schemes, CTs, PTs, and control wiring to ensure proper system performance and coordination.
  • Respond to electrical system abnormalities, support emergency restoration efforts, and work closely with Operations and Engineering teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain detailed test reports, maintenance records, relay settings documentation, and compliance records to support safe and reliable operations.
