NovacoreNew York, NY

About The Position

Novacore is seeking a Reinsurance Lead Actuary to join their team. This role is responsible for building and leading the actuarial function for the reinsurance division, focusing on pricing, portfolio management, data science, and AI integration. The position offers a unique opportunity to shape a growing division from the ground up, with direct impact on strategy and a focus on innovation, particularly in the application of AI and modern data science techniques to reinsurance problems. The company emphasizes a collaborative, results-driven environment with opportunities for professional growth and advancement.

Requirements

  • Strong grounding in mathematical statistics, actuarial science, and practical (re)insurance fundamentals.
  • Reinsurance experience strongly preferred (treaty and/or facultative pricing, on the carrier, reinsurer, or broker side).
  • P&C and commercial-lines background; casualty exposure is a plus.
  • Programming proficiency in Python, R, and/or SQL.
  • Hands-on experience with experience rating, exposure rating, and reinsurance pricing tools (e.g., Aon Altair, MetaRisk, or homegrown equivalents).
  • Familiarity with modern data tools: version control (Git), cloud platforms, BI tools (Power BI, Tableau), or notebook environments (Jupyter).
  • Experience using AI tools in a daily workflow.
  • Curiosity about how LLMs, agentic frameworks, and automation can transform traditional reinsurance workflows.
  • Willingness to prototype, experiment, and ship solutions.
  • Hunger, conscientiousness, and a genuine desire to learn and grow into a leader.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity.
  • Ability to communicate complex actuarial concepts to non-actuarial stakeholders.
  • Judgment and presence to own the actuarial voice in the room.

Nice To Haves

  • Progress toward CAS designation is valued; ACAS/FCAS is a plus but not required.
  • Pricing treaty or facultative reinsurance and ability to explain a loss pick to an underwriter and a broker.
  • Built an experience- or exposure-rating tool in Python or R.
  • Used Git for version control on an actuarial project.
  • Used an LLM to solve a real work problem (submission triage, data extraction, report drafting).
  • Looked at a legacy spreadsheet pricing process and thought “I could rebuild this properly”.
  • Read actuarial papers AND machine learning papers and see the connections.
  • Desire to build a division, not just join one.

Responsibilities

  • Own the actuarial pricing for SUI's casualty facultative book, including experience and exposure rating, loss picks, and renewal assumptions, in partnership with underwriters.
  • Build the pricing and portfolio-steering framework for SUI's growth lines: property facultative, broker facilities, and casualty treaty.
  • Perform loss ratio analysis, rate adequacy reviews, trend studies, and experience monitoring across the reinsurance book.
  • Explain methodologies, loss picks, and renewal outcomes to underwriters, cedents, brokers, and leadership.
  • Contribute to shaping the growth of SUI into a multi-line reinsurance platform by applying actuarial expertise to new-line launches and facility design.
  • Evaluate exposure, aggregation, and cat risk as it pertains to the book, supporting structuring and capacity decisions.
  • Construct the portfolio by determining which risks to take, at what price, attachment point, and for what return.
  • Market programs, updates, and new initiatives to carrier partners.
  • Build SUI's data-science infrastructure from the ground up, including pipelines, rating tools, dashboards, and data architecture.
  • Apply modern data science techniques such as predictive modeling, GLMs, gradient boosting, and clustering to reinsurance pricing and portfolio problems.
  • Leverage AI tools (LLMs, agentic workflows, Claude) to automate and augment work.
  • Modernize legacy spreadsheet-driven workflows.
  • Serve on the Chief Actuary's leadership team, influencing strategy and decision-making.
  • Act as the single actuarial point of contact for the reinsurance division.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, claims, data engineering, analytics, and leadership across Novacore.
  • Contribute to tech-stack decisions, evaluating platforms, prototyping solutions, and building the reinsurance actuarial infrastructure.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits
  • Year-round social and community events
  • Ongoing mentorship and professional development
  • Endless opportunities for upward mobility
  • Exam support
