About The Position

Tewksbury Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH), is seeking a dynamic rehabilitation counselor to provide person-centered and trauma-informed recovery and rehabilitation services to individuals with psychiatric needs in the Northeast Area. The selected candidate will deliver quality Rehabilitation Services in accordance with The Rehab Department, Tewksbury Hospital, DMH, and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards. The position involves working Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 am to 8:00 pm, and Saturdays from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated skill with psychiatrically disabled clients.
  • Ability to design and evaluate assigned program curriculum.
  • Ability to order and maintain sufficient supplies for assigned program.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of rehabilitation as it relates to persons with mental illness and dual diagnoses.
  • Ability to evaluate patient's skill and interest to establish goals and independent rehab programs.
  • Ability to interact with persons we serve as well as staff in a professional and effective manner.
  • Exercises group leadership and provide instruction and training.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing professionally; maintain accurate records and other patient and/or program related information.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in general for rehab activities.
  • Ability to problem-solve and maintain a professional manner in difficult and/or emergency situations.
  • At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or paraprofessional experience in social work, social casework, vocational counseling, employment counseling, rehabilitation counseling, or educational counseling.
  • A Bachelor's or higher degree in rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, education of the physically or emotionally handicapped, education of the multiple handicapped, education of the learning disabled, social work, psychology, human services, or counseling may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.
  • A Bachelor's or higher degree in a major other than rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation counseling, education of the physically or emotionally handicapped, education of the multiple handicapped, education of the learning disabled, social work, psychology, human services, or counseling may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience on the basis of four years of education for one year of experience.
  • Licensure as a Licensed Rehabilitation Counselor by the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health Professionals or Certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification may be substituted for the required experience.
  • One year of education equals 30 semester hours. Education toward a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal laws, including HIPAA regulations regarding patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Promote and support a recovery and resiliency model of rehabilitation by implementing SAMHSA’s 10 fundamental components of recovery.
  • Adhere to the procedures and policies of Tewksbury Hospital, the Psychiatric Units, and the Rehab Center.
  • Utilize a person-centered approach when providing Rehab services and assist in the development and implementation of person-centered treatment plans.
  • Provide services and opportunities that promote continuity of care, community integration, and a recovery-facilitating environment.
  • Assist individuals served in developing individualized and person-centered rehabilitation/recovery goals and schedules, and support progress monitoring.
  • May function as the Rehab Representative by actively participating on a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with other professionals, contributing to the master treatment plan, and completing documentation.
  • Promote teamwork by demonstrating flexibility, listening to others' views, compromising, managing conflict, and staying focused on positive outcomes.
  • Provide group-based treatment in locked forensic space.
  • Plan and lead/co-lead a wide range of groups, events, and activities in various contexts as assigned.
  • Be responsible for transporting/escorting and supervising individuals receiving services.
  • Perform related duties as required.
