About The Position

This position is a Regular, Part-time role within the Seniors Mental Health Physiotherapy department at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH). The Rehabilitation Assistant will assist registered therapists with patient care, including transfer and mobility training, ADL retraining, data collection, administering specific modalities, and reinforcing education programs. The role requires monitoring client responses to treatment, documenting effects, and maintaining therapy equipment and space. The position may be scheduled at the West 5th Campus (Hamilton Mountain). Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Physiotherapy Assistant/Occupational Therapist Assistant 2-year diploma program
  • PTA/OTA certification recognized by the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario (CPO) and the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO) required
  • Demonstrated interest and proficiency in both Physiotherapist Assistant/Occupational Therapist roles with defined populations required
  • Demonstrated ability to function within an interprofessional team managing competing demands from multiple assigning therapists and units required
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving and critical thinking skills and demonstrated ability to work to full scope of the assistant role in both OTA and PTA capacity required
  • Minimum of three and up to six months of clinical experience required
  • Ability to communicate with an elderly and/or frail population
  • CPR certificate
  • Familiarity with various computer applications i.e. MS Word, internet, patient registration systems
  • Physical ability for the regular use of therapy equipment i.e. wheelchairs, bariatric chairs, mechanical lifts, weights
  • Ability to function effectively within a team and manage competing demands
  • Must be capable of performing all related duties i.e. lifting, transferring patients, walking with and portering patients
  • Good work performance and a good attendance record are essential

  • Demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity and expertise in the care of seniors and their families

Nice To Haves

  • Two years experience in a hospital or clinic environment working with clients with orthopaedic, rheumatic, neurological, respiratory and geriatric conditions preferred
  • Gentle Persuasive Approach training preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assists the registered therapist with transfer and mobility training and subsequent promotion of independence in mobility and transfers by following through with the recommendations of the therapists
  • Follows through with ADL retraining at the recommendations of the Occupational Therapist to maximize client independence
  • Assists the therapist in the collection of data for use in the assessment and reassessment process
  • Administers specific modalities and treatment programs at the instruction of the Physiotherapist, including ice/heat, hydrotherapy, TENS, intermittent compression and pulmonary hygiene programs
  • Follows pulmonary hygiene programs developed by the Physiotherapist
  • Reinforces education programs under the direction of the therapists regarding energy conservation, use of assistive devices, joint protection, posture, etc.
  • Monitors/observes the client's response to treatment, documenting effects and informing the therapist of any positive or adverse effects
  • Completes workload statistics
  • Provides general housekeeping tasks such as keeping therapy equipment and space clean and maintaining inventory
  • Attends staff meetings
  • Provides clerical assistance when requested, and other related duties as assigned by the Manager
