About The Position

This position is responsible for the accurate collection and entry of patient demographic, insurance, and physician information into the Hospital patient accounting computer system. Also responsible for entry of outpatient laboratory orders into the Hospital clinical order entry system. This position also entails rotating throughout all areas of hospital registration as deemed necessary by management, telecommunicating activities of Windber Medical Center as well as processing over the counter cash receipts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Three to six months related experience and/or training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients in a courteous and friendly manner.
  • Make patients feel welcome and emphasize that the Hospital’s priority is to serve them.
  • Wait on patients in a timely manner.
  • Answers questions regarding permissible patient, physician and hospital information.
  • Provide general directions to various locations within hospital.
  • Enter patient data into the computer.
  • Obtain proper demographic information for billing purposes.
  • Obtain correct insurance information from the patient for the billing process with 95% accuracy.
  • Obtain proper consent forms and ensure patient signs each form.
  • Order correct tests for patients as indicated in the doctor’s prescriptions.
  • Ensure patients are obtaining the correct test as ordered by the physician.
  • Enter physician orders into the computer and ensure that all the tests are ordered correctly in the Order Entry system from the physician’s prescription.
  • Obtain referrals or authorizations for tests that are ordered by requesting same from patient or calling the physician’s office to obtain the referral or authorization.
  • The referral or authorization number should be present for all tests requiring said authorization.
  • Organize patient chart for Admission or Hold for Observation.
  • Call the appropriate floor and obtain a room assignment for the patient.
  • Organize a patient chart with proper consent forms that must be signed.
  • Prepare identification bracelets.
  • Indicate patient status change in the computer system.
  • Verify that the correct patient is being discharged from the computer and accurately record the time and discharge status of the patient on the registration.
  • Verify that the correct patient is being transferred in the computer and accurately record the time of transfer and the room to which the patient is being transferred.
  • Verify the correct patient inpatient/outpatient status is being changed and record the date, time, room and diagnosis of the patient.
  • Check census activity with the nursing floors at end of the day to ensure 100% accuracy of status changes.
  • Serve as a cashier
  • Provide change as needed
  • Accept all billing payments including pharmacy payments.
