About The Position

The ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (ASNA) is seeking a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to join their team. ASNA is a premier training center for high-quality, high-volume companion animal sterilization, altering over 21,000 animals annually and training veterinary professionals since 2005. The RVT will be central to daily medical operations, acting as a liaison between veterinarians, support staff, and clients. This role requires excellent multitasking, communication, and teamwork skills, with a commitment to high performance and best practices. Responsibilities include patient care, assisting veterinarians, facility upkeep, and client interaction.

  • Possess a valid NC Registered Veterinary Technician license or obtain one within 60 days of hiring.
  • Provide a valid driver’s license upon hire and pass a motor vehicle history check demonstrating a safe driving history.
  • Possess working knowledge of basic computer/technology skills including email and Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to lift 35 lbs/16 kgs without assistance and over this weight with assistance, and the ability to consistently stand, bend, lift, and climb during the course of a regular work shift.
  • Degree of Registered Veterinary Technician or equivalent from an American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (AVMA CVTEA) accredited program OR a Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) accredited veterinary technology program.
  • Passing of the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).
  • Associates: Veterinary Technician, High School Diploma (Required)

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year experience as a registered veterinary technician in a clinical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and execute directives from veterinarians.
  • Provide medical leadership to veterinary and kennel assistant teams.
  • Execute medical and surgical floor duties.
  • Safely handle controlled and other prescription drugs.
  • Maintain medical records.
  • Provide impeccable care to surgical patients.
  • Assist veterinarians, veterinary assistants, and kennel assistants in pre-, peri-, and postoperative duties.
  • Participate in facility upkeep and maintenance, including cleaning, inventory, and stocking.
  • Host clients and visiting trainees.
  • Participate in relationships and communications with private sector veterinarians, professional associations, professional advisors, vendors, transport partners, public clients, mentees, and internal ASPCA departments and professionals.
  • Be well versed in ASNA/ASPCA protocols, procedures, and standards of care.
  • Participate in onboarding and training ASNA Registered Veterinary Technicians and other staff.
  • Provide a safe and compassionate environment for staff, clients, and animals in ASNA care.
  • Receive training in, and develop proficiency in, low-stress animal handling skills and implement these handling techniques consistently in all interactions with animals.
  • Instill the guiding principle that everyone can, and should, actively support the animals’ behavioral and mental health in everything they do.
  • Participate in mentoring visiting trainees relative to veterinary technician duties.
  • Practice and encourage open and transparent communications in all interactions, seek out regular feedback from team and peers, and receive feedback in the constructive spirit intended.
  • Drive transport vehicles as needed.
  • Perform the daily medical duties of a veterinary technician which include but are not limited to: Assistance to veterinarians, veterinary assistants, and kennel assistants; Medical and surgical duties expected of a graduate and licensed Veterinary Technician; Drug handling including controlled substances in compliance with DEA regulations, ASNA protocols, and all other federal, state, and local laws; Medical leadership for veterinary assistants and kennel assistants; Flow of daily operations and surgical teams; Patient emergency support; Medical paperwork.
  • Perform the supportive medical duties of a veterinary technician which include but are not limited to: Equipment operation and maintenance; Inventory control including expendables and drugs; Upkeep and maintenance of medical, surgical, and kennel areas; All duties of a veterinary assistant as needed; All duties of a kennel assistant as needed.

  • Serve in any surgical, medical, or training role as needed and support all daily operational processes to complete the day’s surgeries and training program goals successfully and safely.
  • Fully engage in the self-performance management process including annual reviews, regular feedback sessions, required compliance training, and goal setting.
  • Maintain all licensures and credentials pertinent to the position.

  • Under the supervision of the MRVT, and in respect to veterinary technician operations, ensure: Smooth and efficient operation of ASNA surgical, medical, and training programs; Program policies and strategies that support ASNA’s high standards of quality and best practices; All aspects of operations are enforced with campus wide consistency and adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations; A positive learning environment across campus supportive of ASNA culture.
  • Participate in assigned ASNA department and program specific projects, cross-departmental working groups, and any other assigned commitments to support ASPCA’s 2030 goals.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the MRVT or the ASNA Senior Leadership Team.
