Registered School Nurse
About The Position
The school nurse will be responsible for assessing and evaluating student health, counseling students, parents, and school personnel, and planning actions to address health problems. This role involves identifying and educating students with special health needs that impact learning, providing disease prevention and control programs, and coordinating health services with educational and community programs. The nurse will also observe school facilities for health and safety modifications, provide emergency care, conduct home assessments, and offer health information on common issues like child neglect, drug abuse, nutrition, and adolescent pregnancy. Additionally, the role includes providing health services for school personnel, attending relevant meetings, assisting physically handicapped students with personal care needs, and offering basic health instruction to complement the Health Education Program.
Requirements
- A valid license to practice as a registered nurse in Massachusetts.
- Completion of a bachelor's degree in nursing or master's degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
- A minimum of 2 full years of employment in child health, community health, or other relevant clinical settings.
- Completion of an orientation program based on the requirements for delivery of school health services by the department of Public Health.
- Must be eligible to apply for DESE Licensure
- Ability to communicate and interact effectively with students and parents and staff
- Ability to apply for certification in school nursing with Department of Education.
- Current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation from a recognized provider.
Responsibilities
- Assess and evaluate the students' health.
- Counsel students, parents and school personnel and plan action for eliminating, minimizing or accepting health problems.
- Assist in the identification and education of students with special health problems, which affect learning and total growth.
- Provide programs for the prevention and control of disease.
- Coordinate health services with health education and other phases of the total educational program.
- Coordinate health services with community health programs.
- Observe school facilities and recommend modifications necessary to maintain optimum health and safety for students and school personnel.
- Provide emergency care in case of injury or sudden illness.
- Provide the home assessment and health in 766 Team Evaluations upon request of the building chairperson.
- Provide information as necessary on frequently encountered health problems, such as: child neglect and abuse drug use and abuse, human nutrition and adolescent pregnancy.
- Provide required health service for school personnel.
- Attend school staff and system health program-related meetings.
- Provide for personal care needs of physically handicapped pupil as required in their educational plans.
- Provide basic health instruction to coordinate with Health Education Program as requested by classroom teachers.
