The Registered Respiratory Therapist initiates, maintains, and discontinues basic and intensive respiratory therapy equipment and techniques for patients of all ages with cardiopulmonary disorders. This role involves preparing and testing equipment, adhering to safety protocols, executing physician's orders, administering medications and therapies such as oxygen, aerosolized medications, Ezpap, chest physical therapy, incentive spirometry, TB skin tests, pulse oximetry, and bedside pulmonary function/mechanics, and high-flow oxygen therapy. Responsibilities also include assessing patient conditions, responding to emergencies like cardiopulmonary arrest, modifying therapy as needed, and maintaining accurate documentation. The therapist participates in continuing education, ensures patient record confidentiality, evaluates ABG reports, performs arterial punctures, and may perform endotracheal intubations. The position requires monitoring and providing respiratory care to patients on continuous mechanical ventilation, in the ICU, and in the emergency department, as well as instructing patients, families, and hospital personnel on equipment use. Collaboration with the multi-disciplinary health team and participation in quality improvement initiatives are also key aspects of the role.
