About The Position

The Pulmonary Disease Navigator is a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) responsible for working directly with patients diagnosed with chronic pulmonary diseases such as COPD, emphysema, pneumonia, asthma, and pulmonary fibrosis. This role acts as a liaison to patients, families, and providers to ensure proper length of stay, adequate education, and safe discharge. The Navigator will ensure quality metrics specific to disease processes are met, promote compliance with chronic pulmonary disease management throughout the continuum of care, and provide referrals for follow-up testing or to other disciplines and specialties. The role requires successful completion of a generic and department-specific competency assessment and experience with pulmonary function testing, GOLD Standards for COPD diagnosis, and six-minute walk tests. Responsibilities include ensuring skilled and competent delivery of Respiratory Care Services as ordered by a physician, in accordance with established protocols, for the treatment, management, control, diagnostic evaluation, and care of patients with cardiopulmonary system deficiencies and abnormalities. Services may include medical gas delivery, pulse oximetry, administration and monitoring of respiratory and therapeutic modalities (aerosolized medications, MDIs, sputum inductions), and arterial blood gas sampling and analysis. The role also involves supporting staff orientation, in-services, and competency needs regarding pulmonary diseases, coordinating follow-up with patients, and holding monthly COPD support group meetings.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an AMA respiratory therapist program.
  • 2 -3 years clinical experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist.
  • Current Florida License as a Respiratory Therapist.
  • NBRC RRT credential.
  • American Heart Association ACLS and BLS certifications.
  • Experience with pulmonary function testing.
  • Experience with the GOLD Standards used in diagnosing COPD.
  • Experience with six minute walk tests.
  • Current practice in area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of computer/information systems and equipment used in performing assigned duties.
  • Knowledge of application of safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Verbal and written communication skills that are sensitive to diversities among age groups, cultures, and education levels facilitating teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Provide referrals for follow-up testing and/or to other disciplines and specialties when appropriate.
  • Successfully complete a generic and department-specific competency assessment.
  • Ensure that the patient has received skilled and competent delivery of Respiratory Care Services, as ordered by a physician in accordance with established protocols set by the facility or other health care provider in the treatment, management, control, diagnostic evaluation and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities associated with the Cardiopulmonary system.
  • Deliver medical gases, perform pulse oximetry for oxygen titration, administer and monitor all respiratory and therapeutic modalities which include aerosolized medications, metered dose inhalers (MDI), sputum inductions, and arterial blood gas sampling and analyses.
  • Support staff orientation, in-services, and competency needs regarding pulmonary diseases.
  • Coordinate follow-up with patients.
  • Hold monthly COPD support group meetings to ensure we are meeting the needs of our patients both in and out of the hospital.
