About The Position

The Ottawa Community Lung Health Program provides an evidence-based approach that improves the health and quality of life of people living with Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Operating within a primary care setting, the program is delivered by a Registered Respiratory Therapist / Certified Respiratory Educator (RRT/CRE) who provides assessment, spirometry testing, education and behavioural management to respiratory clients and their families. We are looking for an experienced bilingual RRT/CRE to join the Ottawa Community Lung Health Program providing services in partnership with the Centre de Sante Communautaire de l’Estrie. The RRT/CRE will practice in accordance with the standards of professional practice as outlined by the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) and the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO), within a client and family centered model of care, upholding the values and vision of SWCHC and the Centre de Sante Communautaire de l’Estrie. The RRT/CRE will work as a member of a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with other allied health and primary care providers, serving as a resource for asthma, COPD and smoking cessation care. Reporting to the Manager of Health Services, the RRT/CRE works as part of a multidisciplinary team that provides excellent care to clients for the screening and management of chronic lung disease. The RRT/CRE establishes strong communication pathways between clients, family physicians, nurse practitioners, specialists, hospitals and other community and regional resources. This position requires the RRT/CRE to assist primary care providers in assessing, diagnosing, and educating clients and their families or caregivers about lung health, focusing on asthma and COPD. Lung health assessments are conducted, spirometry is performed in compliance with American Thoracic Society (ATS) guidelines and education, and self-management strategies are taught to clients, families, and caregivers in accordance with program standards. Other duties include partnering with community organizations, local health care providers and hospitals to increase awareness, knowledge, and skills to optimize lung health.

Requirements

  • 2-5 years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • Knowledge of acts or legislation that govern practice: Registered Health Professionals ACT (RHPA), Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Infection, Prevention and Control Measures (IPAC)
  • Knowledge of primary health care and the social determinants of health
  • Demonstrate skills in applying Adult Education Principles
  • Knowledge of Chronic Disease Prevention Model and Self-Management Programs
  • Knowledge of American Thoracic Society (ATS) spirometry guidelines, Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) asthma and COPD guidelines
  • Comprehensive respiratory assessment and interventions, as appropriate
  • Member in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
  • Current and Active general certificate of registration with CRTO
  • Current Certified Respiratory Educator designation
  • Current CPR Level C
  • Valid Professional Liability Insurance
  • Bilingual, English and French, preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Strong technical skills in spirometry testing, SPIROTREC certification preferable
  • Smoking cessation – TEACH trained preferable
  • Other additional languages an asset

Responsibilities

  • Provide care and education to adult and pediatric clients, families and care providers using motivation interviewing techniques
  • Conduct spirometry testing in accordance with ATS guidelines for both screening and diagnosis of respiratory disease
  • Recommend appropriate treatment options according to CTS guidelines
  • Knowledge translation of Canadian Respiratory guidelines and best-practice standards to other health care providers to improve the health of clients diagnosed with respiratory disease
  • Develop, implement and revise individualized self-management plans to meet clients’ needs in collaboration with the client and other members of their healthcare team
  • Conduct individual and family assessments to identify strengths, available resources, psychological factors, socioeconomic impact, education needs and barriers to self-management
  • Assist our clients in navigating the healthcare system to reduce barriers to access; access to essential medication and devices
  • Maintain accurate documentation of clients’ therapy using EMR and spirometry reports
