About The Position

Performs basic and critical respiratory care services for adult and geriatric patients with respiratory disease, as ordered by the physician and in accordance with current department policies. This role involves completing paperwork, electronic medical records, flow sheets, and charges for each patient. The position requires the ability to work independently and supervise others as delegated. The Registered Respiratory Care Practitioner serves as a knowledge resource to physicians and hospital staff regarding respiratory care techniques and the effectiveness of safe respiratory therapy administration methods. Responsibilities include assessing and documenting the appropriateness of prescribed therapy, administering aerosol and oxygen therapy, drawing arterial blood gases, providing care to ventilator patients, and assisting with department record keeping and operations. The role also involves training and supervising new employees, documenting care provided, generating necessary documents for charges, instructing nursing personnel on equipment surveillance, performing pulmonary function tests and drainage procedures, and providing patient care related to cardio-respiratory disease. Additionally, the practitioner will make rounds to check respiratory therapy equipment, ensure compliance with ventilator bundle orders and VAP bundles, identify patient needs and outcomes, update diagnoses, and assist with equipment maintenance, cleaning, and setup of specialty equipment. The practitioner will also assist physicians with bronchoscopies and special procedures, and contribute to quality control, staff schedules, and competencies.

Requirements

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential and Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license Required
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Required
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification Required
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification Required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification Required
  • Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing, reaching above shoulders, sitting, walking inclines and declines, standing, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive hand motions.
  • Vision requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to pull, lift, transfer, or push a patient side to side, to a sitting position, to a standing position, or laterally.
  • Demonstrate a pull lift of 50 pounds from the floor.
  • Conform with all HIPAA and other confidentiality regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Makes rounds to check all respiratory therapy equipment in use or on standby in patient areas.
  • Ensures completion of the initial ventilator bundle orders upon initiation of mechanical ventilation.
  • Ensures compliance of VAP bundle for all patients receiving mechanical ventilation.
  • Identifies measurable and reasonable outcomes while using appropriate therapy interventions to resolve patient needs.
  • Updates and communicates the diagnosis throughout the patient's stay based on patient's changing condition and disease status.
  • Assists with maintenance and processing of equipment and products used in providing respiratory therapy services.
  • Serves as a knowledge resource to the physician and hospital staff in relation to the technical aspects of respiratory care and the effectiveness of methods to administer safe respiratory therapy.
  • Assists in stocking and re-ordering parts and equipment.
  • Assists in the set up of specialty equipment.
  • Keeps the equipment clean and ready for its next use.
  • Assists physicians with bronchoscopies and special procedures.
  • Assists with quality control, staff schedules and competencies.
