About The Position

The University of Ottawa's Student Affairs department is seeking a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) to join their Health and Wellness Centre Operations team. This role is crucial for delivering professional medical services to students, evaluating their needs, and ensuring nursing care is provided according to the College of Nurses of Ontario and university policies. The RPN will triage operational tasks, offer direct nursing care, deliver health education, and provide consultations on student-related health issues. Requirements

  • Successful completion of Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) Diploma.
  • Valid certificate of registration/licensing in the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • At least three (3) years’ experience in a primary health care environment.
  • Bilingualism: French and English (spoken and written), with a minimum proficiency level of Low Advanced in both oral comprehension and reading comprehension in the second official language.
  • Valid certification for CPR and AED.
  • Previous experience with EMRs (e.g., Telus PS suite, OSCAR, Purkinje).
  • Sound knowledge of nursing processes and professional responsibilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both effectively as a member of a team and independently.
  • Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and prioritizing skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to handle difficult situations with professionalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to respect diversity and use inclusive behavior, responding with sensitivity and self-awareness to the unique needs of students.
  • General knowledge of computer software applications including word processing and mail applications (e.g.: Word, Outlook).

  • Registered Nurse (RN) qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Completes preliminary student assessment including reason of visit, height, weight, and vitals, and manages student flow in examination rooms.
  • Assesses students’ needs, documents all medical information, and informs physicians of specific situations.
  • Ensures required nursing care is delivered to meet specific student needs.
  • Monitors, assesses, addresses, documents, and reports symptoms and changes in students' conditions.
  • Administers medications and treatments as prescribed by a physician and according to established policies and protocols within their scope of practice.
  • Provides basic laboratory and phlebotomy procedures and treatment services (e.g., tests, glucometer readings, dressings, injections, immunizations, allergy treatments).
  • Ensures infection control and occupational health and safety standards are followed.
  • Ensures that exam areas are disinfected and stocked with medical and laboratory supplies.
  • Provides education to students and their families on health-related issues in collaboration with other health care providers.
  • Collaborates with members of an interdisciplinary health team to plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate student care in consultation with students.
  • Assists in surgical and other medical procedures within their scope of practice.
  • Maintains confidentiality and its application to students’ electronic health records.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within RPN scope of practice.
