About The Position

Reporting directly to the Manager Surgical Day Care and Procedures, this role is responsible for the pre, intra, and post-operative care of surgical and procedural patients. The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) utilizes the nursing process to direct and deliver comprehensive nursing care to patients in Surgical Day Care and Procedures in a safe and proficient manner according to individual patient needs. The successful incumbent provides clinical support intraoperatively throughout minor surgical procedures (Colonoscopy, gastroscopy, urological procedures), assesses and monitors the patient’s condition throughout the pre-operative and post-operative period, and assures patient safety. The candidate will also provide clear education and communication, ensuring care meets individual needs while supporting our mission to improve access, reduce pain, and enhance quality of life throughout the community.

Requirements

  • Current RPN registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • BCLS certification (must provide proof of valid certification upon hire)
  • Minimum two-three years of recent endoscopy experience or acute care surgical setting
  • Excellent critical thinking skills during emergent procedures
  • Assisting in endoscopic procedures or pre-operative procedure in an endoscopy setting
  • Strong assessment skills and ability to respond effectively in crisis or emergency situation
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, team-based environment with shifting priorities
  • Demonstrated excellence in patient and family education and communication
  • Ability to work 1 on 1 with surgeons and physicians to prepare patients for surgical procedures
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills to support effective coordination of patient care and procedural flow within the department.
  • Satisfactory passing of a criminal record check/vulnerable sector check
  • Provide proof of Immunization and TB records

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in IV insertion is preferred and will be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Care of patients pre-op/ procedure, intra procedure and post-operatively/ post-procedure.
  • Skill, knowledge, and competency with assisting physician with endoscopy and other procedures.
  • Proper use, care, and handling of the endoscopic and other procedural equipment.
  • Monitor, record, and report symptoms and changes in patients’ condition during the inter-operative stage of the procedure, collaboratively and in conjunction with the Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned.
  • Demonstrated experience in endoscope cleaning and handling and care as well as the setup and turnover of procedure room.
  • Care planning and coordination of care with various team members.
  • Utilization of computerized systems for documentation of patient care.
  • Manage workload effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Participation in project teams or Hospital committees as required.
  • Endoscopy experience an asset or related procedural experience.
  • Ability to provide and receive constructive feedback.
  • Participate in all mandatory training requirements and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, company Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines.
